CSK's Remarkable Comeback

In a recent match, Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain Ruturaj Gaikwad expressed his admiration for Sanju Samson, who played a pivotal role in their victory against Delhi Capitals (DC). Gaikwad also highlighted the contributions of young player Kartik Sharma, who has been instrumental in the team's run-chase.

After starting the season with three consecutive defeats, CSK has bounced back, achieving five wins and five losses, positioning themselves as serious contenders for the playoffs. Currently, they sit in sixth place with 10 points. Upcoming matches against the struggling Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), along with games against Gujarat Titans (GT) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), will be crucial, especially with two of these matches taking place in Chennai. The team is gradually finding its rhythm, even in the absence of MS Dhoni, who is recovering from a calf injury. The spin duo of Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmed has provided a significant advantage over pace bowlers, particularly on pitches that favor spin.

In his post-match comments, Gaikwad noted that despite early setbacks, he and head coach Stephen Fleming maintained a positive outlook, believing that the team's competitiveness has improved compared to the previous year. He acknowledged the bowling unit's performance, even though Anshul Kamboj had a challenging outing with figures of 0/49 in four overs.

"Sanju's arrival has been a game-changer, and our bowling has been effective. After securing a couple of wins, the team has started to gel. I am particularly thankful for Sanju's presence following his impressive T20 World Cup performance; he is our backbone. However, it’s the bowlers who truly make the difference. Akeal and Jamie (Overton) consistently deliver, and while Anshul had a tough game today, the overall bowling unit has come together well," he remarked.

Regarding Kartik, who struggled in his initial five matches without scoring over 20 runs, Gaikwad emphasized that his talent was evident, and he simply needed to gain momentum. Kartik has since demonstrated his capabilities with crucial innings of 54* and 41* in recent matches.

"The skill was always there; he just needed some momentum. We were chasing larger targets earlier, which limited his opportunities. In the last match, he had the chance to settle in, showcasing his all-around abilities and ability to rotate the strike effectively. It’s great to see his confidence building," he concluded.

In seven matches, Kartik has accumulated 153 runs, averaging 30.60 with a strike rate exceeding 127, including one half-century.

Post-match, Kartik described his partnership with Sanju as enjoyable, noting that Sanju had pointed out the pitch's assistance to spinners.

"The pitch was conducive to spin, causing the ball to stop and turn significantly. I realized it wasn’t a massive target, so we took our time, which worked in our favor. Sanju advised me to play my natural game, which I did," he shared.

When asked about targeting specific bowlers, Kartik mentioned there were no particular targets, focusing instead on playing within his range and making solid contact.

In the match, DC chose to bat first but found themselves in trouble at 69/5. A partnership between Tristan Stubbs (38 off 31 balls, including one four and two sixes) and Sameer Rizvi (40* off 24 balls, with four sixes) helped DC reach 155/7 in their 20 overs. Akeal (1/19 in four overs) and Noor (2/22 in three overs) delivered outstanding bowling performances. CSK's chase was led by Sanju (87* off 52 balls, with seven fours and six sixes) and Kartik (41* off 31 balls, with three fours and two sixes), who completed the chase in just 17.3 overs, winning by eight wickets.
