CSK Secures Record Victory Over MI

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 23: In a thrilling IPL 2026 encounter, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) triumphed over the Mumbai Indians (MI) by a staggering 103 runs, marking a significant milestone in their rivalry. This match, often referred to as the "El Clasico" of IPL, showcased a brilliant century from Sanju Samson and an exceptional bowling display led by Akeal Hosein.

CSK set a challenging target of 207 runs, thanks to Samson's impressive 101 runs. In response, MI struggled to cope with the pressure, collapsing to just 104 runs. The early loss of wickets proved detrimental, as CSK's bowlers dominated the field, leading to a comprehensive victory.

This win propelled CSK to fifth place in the IPL 2026 standings and established their largest victory margin in IPL history, surpassing their previous record of 97 runs against Kings XI Punjab in 2015.

For MI, this defeat marked their most significant loss by runs in IPL history, eclipsing their previous worst of 87 runs against the Rajasthan Royals in 2013. Additionally, it was their largest defeat at the Wankhede Stadium, surpassing a 39-run loss to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2015.

MI's total of 104 runs is now their lowest score against CSK in IPL, falling short of their previous low of 136/8 in Dubai during the 2021 season. Since 2023, CSK has now won five out of their last six matches against MI.

MI's innings began disastrously as they lost opener Danish Malewar for a golden duck, dismissed by Akeal Hosein in the first over. The situation worsened when Mukesh Choudhary bowled Quinton de Kock for just 7 runs, leaving MI at 11/2 after two overs.

Hosein struck again in the third over, sending Naman Dhir back to the pavilion for a duck, further deepening MI's woes at 11/3. By the end of the sixth over, MI managed only 29 runs for the loss of three wickets. However, a brief recovery led by Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav saw them reach 78/3 at the halfway mark.

In the 11th over, Hosein claimed the vital wicket of Tilak Varma, who scored 37 runs off 29 balls, leaving MI at 85/4. Noor Ahmad then delivered a double blow in the 13th over, dismissing captain Hardik Pandya for just 1 and Sherfane Rutherford for a golden duck, leaving MI reeling at 87/6.

Hosein continued his impressive performance, taking his fourth wicket by dismissing Suryakumar Yadav, who scored 36 runs. MI's batting lineup crumbled, and they ultimately fell to 104 runs, with Gurjapneet Singh taking the final wicket of Jasprit Bumrah.

Akeal Hosein's outstanding bowling figures of 4/17 were complemented by Noor Ahmad's 2/24. Sanju Samson's remarkable innings of 101 runs off 54 balls, featuring 10 fours and 6 sixes, was pivotal in CSK's innings.

This century marked Samson's fifth in IPL history, placing him joint fourth on the all-time list alongside KL Rahul, trailing only Virat Kohli, Jos Buttler, and Chris Gayle. Samson's century was also the first by a CSK player against MI in IPL history.

Winning the toss, MI opted to bowl first. CSK's opening pair of Sanju Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad started aggressively, scoring 73 runs in the first six overs, marking their second-highest power-play score against MI.

Despite losing Gaikwad early, Samson and Sarfaraz Khan maintained the momentum, with Samson reaching a rapid fifty off just 26 balls. However, MI's bowlers managed to take wickets at crucial moments, but CSK's total of 207 was ultimately too high to chase.

Samson's explosive batting in the final overs helped CSK surpass the 200-run mark, solidifying their dominance in this historic match.
