Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders Honor CD Gopinath in IPL 2026 Match
Tribute to a Cricket Legend
During their IPL 2026 match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on April 14, players from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) donned black armbands to honor the late CD Gopinath, a former Indian cricketer who passed away on April 9 at the age of 96.
This heartfelt tribute highlighted Gopinath's lasting impact on Indian cricket, marking him as a significant yet understated figure in the sport's early development.
The gesture from both teams emphasized the strong bond between the current game and its historical roots. Gopinath, who was deeply involved with cricket in Chennai, was held in high esteem within Indian cricket circles.
At the domestic level, Gopinath was a key player for Madras cricket, leading the team to its first Ranji Trophy victory in the 1954-55 season, where he notably scored a century in the final match. Over his first-class career, he accumulated 4,259 runs, including nine centuries, showcasing his refined batting style.
Born in Chennai in 1930, Gopinath played for India in eight Test matches from 1951 to 1960. He made a remarkable debut against England at the Brabourne Stadium, scoring an unbeaten 50 and 42. His contributions were pivotal during a transformative period for Indian cricket, including being part of the team that achieved its first Test victory against England in 1952, a milestone in the nation's cricket history.
Even after his playing days, Gopinath remained committed to Indian cricket, serving in various roles, including as a national selector and later as the manager of the Indian team during the 1979 tour of England.
In the match, KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane won the toss and chose to bowl first against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), led by Ishan Kishan.
