Calls for Kolkata Knight Riders to Release Mustafizur Rahman Amid Controversy
Controversy Surrounds KKR's Selection of Bangladeshi Cricketer
Aligarh (Uttar Pradesh) [India], January 2: Maulana Chaudhary Ifraheem Husain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of Uttar Pradesh, has urged the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), co-owned by Shah Rukh Khan, to release Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman. This demand comes in light of alleged human rights violations against minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh.
Husain expressed his concerns, stating that the global community is aware of these injustices and questioned Shah Rukh Khan's decision to retain Mustafizur. He has formally requested an apology from Khan regarding the selection of Rahman for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 season.
In an interview, Husain remarked, “The atrocities faced by minorities in Bangladesh are evident to everyone. Yet, KKR has chosen to sign Mustafizur Rahman. Why is Shah Rukh Khan refusing to let him go? I urge him to take action and ensure Mustafizur is not part of the team.”
Mustafizur Rahman was acquired by KKR for an impressive Rs 9.20 crore during the IPL auction held last December, sparking a debate over his participation in the league amidst ongoing violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh.
BJP leader Sangeet Som has labeled Shah Rukh Khan a traitor, accusing him of financially supporting players from a nation perceived as hostile to India. He stated, “With the ongoing persecution of Hindus in Bangladesh, including violence against women and the destruction of homes, it is unacceptable for someone like Shah Rukh Khan to invest in players from such a country. I want to make it clear that Mustafizur Rahman will not be allowed to play here.”
