Managing Player Fitness for Upcoming Matches

In Guwahati, BCCI Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar emphasized the importance of medical evaluations from the team's support staff in overseeing the fitness of key players like Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya, both of whom are included in the ODI squad for the series against Afghanistan.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the squad for the forthcoming Test match and a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan, scheduled from June 14 to June 20, following a one-off Test starting on June 6.

Shubman Gill has been appointed as the captain for both formats, with KL Rahul stepping in as vice-captain for the Test matches, taking over from Rishabh Pant. Shreyas Iyer will serve as vice-captain for the ODIs.

Agarkar addressed the challenges of managing player workloads and injuries during the IPL, stating that it is primarily the responsibility of players, trainers, and physiotherapists to determine if a player can continue despite discomfort.

During the ongoing IPL 2026 season, Rohit Sharma missed several matches due to a hamstring injury, while Hardik Pandya is in recovery from a back spasm.

Agarkar remarked, "Players often have a sense of their own capabilities regarding injuries. I can't definitively say if they are playing through pain. Our goal is to have them fit for national representation, but the trainers and physios are the experts who provide feedback on their condition."

He also mentioned that the selection committee relies on the medical team's assessments when finalizing the squads, with a willingness to reevaluate fitness as the matches approach.

"I trust the medical team's judgment. If they confirm a player's fitness, I have to rely on that. If, in a couple of weeks, we learn that a player isn't fit, we will make adjustments accordingly. Currently, I have been informed that they are on track, and we will reassess as needed. I depend on the physio's insights and have complete confidence in their evaluations," he added.

The ODI squad for India includes: Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer (vc), KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, Hardik Pandya, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna, Prince Yadav, Gurnoor Brar, and Harsh Dubey.

It is important to note that Rohit Sharma's and Hardik Pandya's participation in the ODI squad is contingent upon receiving fitness clearance.
