Auqib Nabi's IPL Journey Begins

New Delhi [India] - April 3: Auqib Nabi is gearing up for his debut in the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Delhi Capitals this season, following an outstanding domestic campaign that led Jammu and Kashmir to their inaugural Ranji Trophy victory.

During a discussion on JioStar, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared his first impressions of Nabi and highlighted what stood out to him.

“I first encountered Auqib Nabi in 2018 while mentoring the Jammu and Kashmir cricket team. We aimed to build a robust squad of eight to ten fast bowlers, and Auqib was a pivotal part of that group. His ability to bowl long spells, particularly in Under-23 and junior cricket, was remarkable. Additionally, his skill in moving the ball late was quite impressive,” Pathan remarked.

The 29-year-old Nabi took 60 wickets during the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy season, playing a crucial role in Jammu and Kashmir's historic title win. He achieved this feat over 10 matches (17 innings) with an impressive average of 12.56, including seven five-wicket hauls, making him the tournament's leading wicket-taker.

Following his domestic success, Nabi was acquired by the Delhi Capitals for Rs 8.4 crore during the 2026 IPL auction.

While Nabi may not bowl at high speeds, his precision in length and line distinguishes him from other fast bowlers.

Pathan elaborated on Nabi's effectiveness despite not reaching speeds of 140 km/h, stating, “Maintaining a bowling action within the body plane is crucial. Auqib possesses this quality; his hand stays aligned with his shoulder, which enhances his line. His seam position, particularly with the new ball, creates significant movement.”

“His wrist position is exceptional, allowing him to bowl with a straight seam. Many international bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, share this trait. Although Auqib may not hit 140 km/h, his deliveries quicken off the pitch. By bowling close to the stumps, he consistently swings the ball away and can surprise batsmen with deliveries that come in, which is a key strength of his,” Pathan concluded.
