Arshdeep Singh Shines as Punjab Kings Triumph Over Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026
Arshdeep Singh's Key Role in PBKS Victory
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], April 16: Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh of Punjab Kings (PBKS) attributed his successful performance against Mumbai Indians (MI) in their IPL 2026 match to a valuable discussion with head coach Ricky Ponting. This conversation helped him regain his rhythm during the game held at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday night.
After being named Player of the Match in PBKS's seven-wicket win, Arshdeep expressed that a straightforward chat with the coaching team and a focused practice session were pivotal in restoring his confidence and control.
“It feels great. I spoke with Ricky (Ponting) about how the ball didn’t feel right when I bowled. After a productive session yesterday, I found my control again, and the ball was seaming and swinging well,” Arshdeep shared during the post-match interview.
He noted that Ponting assisted him in managing expectations following his recent successes, including notable performances in the T20 World Cup.
“The conversation wasn’t technical. I was putting too much pressure on myself. He reminded me that after a high from the World Cup win, it’s unrealistic to maintain that level all the time,” the left-arm bowler explained.
Discussing his bowling techniques, Arshdeep mentioned he is still refining his 'wobble ball' while adhering to clear strategies for different game situations.
“I’ve been focusing on wide yorkers... The strategy is straightforward: if the batters are well-set and the boundary is long, I’ll go wide. If the yorker is working well or the batter is new, I’ll target the stumps,” he elaborated.
He also acknowledged his rising fame, crediting social media for enhancing his visibility among fans.
“Much of my recognition comes from social media. Many fans know me through reels and memes,” the PBKS pacer remarked.
In the match itself, Punjab Kings showcased their strength in IPL 2026 with a convincing seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium.
This win propelled PBKS to the top of the standings with four victories and one no-result, surpassing the defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), while MI fell to ninth place with only one win from five matches.
Batting first, MI scored 195/6, led by Quinton de Kock’s impressive 112* off 60 balls and a significant 122-run partnership with Naman Dhir, who contributed a brisk 50. Arshdeep Singh was the standout bowler for PBKS, taking 3 wickets for 22 runs.
In response, PBKS successfully chased down the target in just 16.3 overs, finishing at 198/3. Prabhsimran Singh was the star with an unbeaten 80 off 39 balls, while captain Shreyas Iyer added a swift 66 off 35 balls, forming a crucial partnership after early challenges. For MI, Allah Ghazanfar managed to take 2 wickets for 32 runs, but the bowling attack struggled against PBKS's dominance.
