Concerns Over Cameron Green's Performance

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India] - On April 15, former Australian captain Aaron Finch expressed his worries regarding Cameron Green's performance as a key all-rounder for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the ongoing IPL 2026 season.

Finch argued that player selection should not be swayed by auction prices, labeling such a mindset as misguided. He emphasized the importance of choosing players based on their suitability for specific roles and the prevailing conditions rather than their cost.

He highlighted Tim Seifert as a viable alternative, praising his skills as an opener, recent form, and diverse range of attacking shots. Finch also pointed out that Green's limited participation in T20 matches recently, due to injuries, should be a factor in selection decisions, prioritizing team balance and current performance.

Finch noted that batting at No. 6 is an unusual position for Green, who has primarily played in the top order throughout his career.

In a match against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Green batted at No. 6 and was dismissed for a golden duck by Noor Ahmed.

Out of 68 T20 innings, Green has only batted at No. 6 nine times, with the last occurrence being in 2024. He was acquired for Rs 25.20 crore during the auction.

Finch remarked, "Facing two spinners [Akeal Hosein and Noor Ahmad], he lasted just one ball. This scenario is particularly challenging for him, especially in a run chase. I believe selecting a team based on price tags is quite ignorant. The auction reflects the demand for a skill set, not a mandate to play someone just because of their price. Green is out of position; his best performances have been at the top of the order," as reported by ESPNcricinfo.

He further stated, "Cameron Green batting at No. 6 is not typical for him. Seifert is available as a specialist opener, and Green hasn't had much recent T20 experience due to injuries. Seifert has shown good form, especially after a successful T20 World Cup, and possesses a variety of shots to offer."

So far in IPL 2026, Green has had a lackluster performance, scoring only 56 runs and taking just one wicket across five matches. KKR currently sits at the bottom of the points table, still searching for their first win of the season.

The team aims to improve their situation when they face the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on April 17, having started the season with four consecutive losses and one match that ended without a result.

This marks the first time in the franchise's history that they have failed to win any of their first five matches, and they are eager to secure their first two points of the season.
