Aakash Chopra Praises Punjab Kings' Thrilling IPL 2026 Opener Victory
Punjab Kings Triumph Over Gujarat Titans in IPL 2026 Opener
New Chandigarh (Punjab) - Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra commended the Punjab Kings (PBKS) for their impressive victory against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in their first match of the IPL 2026 season. He pointed out the team's effective bowling, Shreyas Iyer's leadership, and Cooper Connolly's stellar batting performance as pivotal factors in securing the win.
After PBKS managed to limit GT to 162 runs for 6 wickets in their allotted 20 overs, thanks to outstanding bowling from Marco Jansen, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Vijaykumar Vyshak, the batting lineup faced a challenge. However, Cooper Connolly's unbeaten 72 runs led the team to a three-wicket victory on Tuesday night.
During a discussion on Star Sports, Aakash Chopra emphasized the strategic use of just five bowlers and Iyer's strong captaincy. He praised Connolly for his composed innings, stating that while the chase could have concluded sooner, the crucial aspect was securing the two points, as standings and net run rate are what ultimately matter at the season's end.
“Learning from victories is always preferable to learning from defeats. The positives were numerous, particularly in the bowling department, which was executed flawlessly. The captaincy was exceptional, utilizing five bowlers effectively. Young Australian batter Cooper Connolly stepped up to lead the team to victory. Although they could have wrapped up the game earlier, the two points are what count. By season's end, discussions will revolve around points and net run rate, not the manner in which they were achieved,” Chopra remarked.
Chopra also highlighted the importance of winning the opening match in a competitive tournament like the IPL, where accumulating points is vital regardless of how they are earned.
“This marks their sixth consecutive season of winning the opening game. In the IPL, you don’t dwell on the two points earned; you simply take them and move forward,” he added.
Analysing Connolly's innings, Sanjay Bangar noted that he capitalized on the Gujarat Titans' loose bowling early on, maintaining a steady run rate. As wickets fell during the middle overs, Connolly exhibited maturity by controlling his instincts and leading the team to victory.
“In the early part of his innings, Connolly took advantage of the Gujarat Titans bowlers' over-execution, who provided ample pace. They could have employed more variations on that pitch. Connolly capitalized on deliveries around his body and kept the scoreboard ticking,” Bangar explained.
“Initially, it seemed he would dominate the game. However, after a few wickets fell, he demonstrated maturity by tempering his natural instincts to ensure the game was finished. That was a very encouraging sign,” Bangar concluded.
The Punjab franchise began their IPL 2026 journey with a thrilling three-wicket win over Gujarat. Chasing a target of 162, Cooper Connolly's composed innings of 72 off 44 balls led the Punjab Kings to victory in 19.1 overs.
A remarkable bowling performance from GT's Prasidh Krishna, who took 3 wickets for 29 runs, triggered a collapse, reducing Punjab from 110 for 2 to 118 for 6. Nevertheless, Connolly maintained his composure, ensuring his team secured their first points with five balls to spare. He was rightfully awarded Player of the Match for his outstanding IPL debut.
