Vaibhav Suryavanshi's Historic Century

Jaipur (Rajasthan) [India], April 29: Following an impressive century against the Gujarat Titans (GT), 14-year-old Rajasthan Royals (RR) opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi expressed his joy, describing the achievement as a "dream" and emphasizing his fearless approach to batting.

At just 14 years and 32 days old, Suryavanshi etched his name in cricket history as the youngest player to score a century in T20 cricket and the fastest Indian to achieve this milestone in IPL history, successfully chasing down a target of 210 runs alongside his partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal.

In the post-match interview, Suryavanshi shared, "It feels amazing. This was my first IPL century in just my third innings. The hard work I've put in over the last few months is paying off. I focus solely on the ball and don't let fear affect my game. I don't overthink the bowlers; I just play my natural game."

He praised Jaiswal, stating, "Batting with him is great; he guides me and brings positive energy to the game."

Suryavanshi showcased his fearless batting style by scoring 28 runs off Ishant Sharma in a single over, which included two fours and three sixes, and also took down all-rounder Karim Janat with a 30-run over, featuring three fours and three sixes.

During the chase, fans witnessed Suryavanshi's exceptional striking as he scored 101 runs off just 38 balls, hitting seven fours and 11 sixes, achieving a remarkable strike rate of 265.79.

He reached his century in just 35 balls, marking the second-fastest century in IPL history, trailing only Chris Gayle's 30-ball century for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in 2013. Suryavanshi is now recognized as the fastest Indian to score a century in the IPL.

At 14 years and 32 days, he surpassed Vijay Zol, who was 18 years and 118 days old when he scored a century for Maharashtra in 2013, making Suryavanshi the youngest T20 centurion ever.

This century is also the seventh-fastest in T20 cricket, with the record for the fastest held by Sahil Chauhan of Estonia, who scored in just 27 balls against Cyprus in 2024.

Suryavanshi's fifty came in just 17 balls, making him the youngest player to achieve an IPL fifty.

The partnership of 166 runs between Vaibhav and Jaiswal is now the highest for any wicket in Rajasthan Royals' history, surpassing the previous record of 155 runs set by Jos Buttler and Devdutt Padikkal against DC in 2022.

Vaibhav began his IPL journey by hitting a six off Shardul Thakur on his very first ball. He has accumulated 151 runs in three matches, averaging 75.50 with a strike rate of 222.05, and his highest score stands at 101*.

During the IPL mega-auction last year, Suryavanshi was a surprising acquisition for RR at Rs 1.1 crore. Born on March 27, 2011, in Bihar, he is the youngest player on the roster. He made his first-class debut for Bihar in January 2024 at just 12 years and 284 days old and was part of the India U19 team against Australia in Chennai, where he scored a century off 58 balls.

He also made his T20 debut for Bihar in the SMAT 2024 tournament, although he had a modest outing. In the ACC Under 19 Asia Cup 2024-25, he was the seventh-highest run-scorer, amassing 176 runs in five matches with a top score of 76*.

In the match, GT batted first, with half-centuries from skipper Shubman Gill (84 runs off 50 balls) and Jos Buttler (50* off 26 balls) helping GT reach 209/4 in 20 overs, while Maheesh Theekshana was RR's standout bowler with figures of 2/35.

In response, Jaiswal (70* off 40 balls) and Suryavanshi (101 off 38 balls) dominated the chase, forming a rapid 166-run partnership in just 71 balls. Riyan Parag (32* off 15 balls) contributed to the victory, leading RR to win in 15.5 overs.

Currently, RR sits in eighth place with three wins and seven losses, totaling six points, while GT is in third place with six wins and three losses, accumulating 12 points.
