IPL Introduces Temporary Replacement Rules for 2025 Season

New Temporary Replacement Policy for IPL Teams

In a significant update for the 2025 IPL season, franchise teams will now have the option to sign temporary replacements during the final phase of the reorganized tournament. However, these players will not be eligible for retention in the subsequent auction. The IPL's existing regulations permit teams to recruit replacements if players are unable to participate due to illness or injury, but this can only occur before or during their twelfth match of the season. In response to recent requests, the league has amended its rules to allow for the signing of temporary replacements for the remainder of this adjusted season.

League's Official Statement

The league stated, "Due to the unavailability of certain foreign players because of national duties, personal issues, or injuries, Temporary Replacement Players will be permitted until the end of this tournament." They further clarified, "These Temporary Replacement players will not be eligible for retention in the following season and must register for the IPL Player Auction 2026."

Reasons Behind the Non-Retention Policy

Players who join as temporary replacements after the league's suspension will not be retained for the next season. This decision aims to discourage franchises from using replacements as a strategy to bypass the auction process, ensuring that such signings are made under genuine circumstances.

Eligible Players for Retention

The IPL has confirmed that all replacements approved before the league's suspension can be retained for the next season. Notably, four players were signed in the 48 hours leading up to the suspension: Sediqullah Atal (Delhi Capitals), Mayank Agarwal (Royal Challengers Bengaluru), and Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Nandre Burger (both Rajasthan Royals).
