IPL Final 2023: Ahmedabad Weather Forecast Raises Concerns for Match Day
Ahmedabad Prepares for IPL Final Amid Rain Predictions
For the second time in three years, the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is set to host the Indian Premier League final. This year marks a historic moment as either the Punjab Kings or the Royal Challengers Bengaluru will secure their first IPL trophy. The much-anticipated match is scheduled for June 3, but the Ahmedabad Weather Department has indicated a possibility of rain during the event.
Arunkumar Dasane, the director of the Ahmedabad weather department, shared insights with a media outlet, stating that isolated areas may experience light to moderate rainfall. He elaborated,
"Our forecast suggests light to moderate rain in certain areas, especially around Ahmedabad and its surroundings. The temperature is expected to hover around 37 degrees, with a strong chance of overcast skies."
Previously, Ahmedabad hosted the second qualifier match between the Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians, which faced a two-hour delay due to rain. Initially, Kolkata was slated to host both matches, but after a nine-day break, the schedule was adjusted, moving the games to Ahmedabad due to anticipated rain in Kolkata, which ultimately remained dry.
Contingency Plans for Rain-affected Matches
Unlike the second qualifier, the IPL final has a reserve day allocated. An additional four-hour window has been set aside to accommodate a full 20-over match. Should rain disrupt the final, it will be rescheduled for the following day.
Ahmedabad has previously experienced a washout during the IPL. In 2023, the final between the Gujarat Titans and Chennai Super Kings was significantly impacted by rain, with the original match day on May 28 completely washed out, and the reserve day also facing interruptions.
