Kolkata Knight Riders Spinner Faces Penalty

Kolkata: Varun Chakaravarthy, a spinner for the Kolkata Knight Riders, has been penalized 25% of his match fees and received a demerit point for violating the IPL Code of Conduct during a recent match against the Chennai Super Kings.

In a match held at Eden Gardens on Wednesday, CSK, who are no longer in contention for the playoffs, triumphed over KKR by two wickets, effectively eliminating Ajinkya Rahane's team from the top four race.

According to the IPL's announcement, Chakaravarthy acknowledged his Level 1 offense under Article 2.5 and accepted the sanction imposed by the Match Referee. The decision made by the Match Referee regarding Level 1 breaches is considered final and binding.

Article 2.5 addresses any 'language, action, or gesture used by a player directed towards a batter upon his dismissal, which could provoke an aggressive response from the dismissed player.'

Chakaravarthy, who took two wickets in the match, made a gesture towards Dewald Brewis after dismissing him for 52 runs, a crucial contribution to CSK's victory.

KKR is set to play their final two league matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad on May 10 and Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 17, both away from home.
