IPL 2026 Opening Ceremony Canceled in Honor of Victims

IPL 2026 Set to Begin Soon

The countdown to IPL 2026 has begun, with the inaugural match scheduled for March 28 between RCB and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Traditionally, an opening ceremony precedes the tournament, but this year, the BCCI has decided to forgo the event.

Reason Behind the Cancellation

The BCCI's decision stems from a tragic incident during IPL 2025, where a stampede during the celebrations resulted in the deaths of 11 fans, including a 14-year-old boy. In a gesture of respect and remembrance for the victims, the BCCI has opted to cancel the opening ceremony.

This information was confirmed by BCCI Secretary Devjeet Saikia, who stated that the match will take place at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, the home ground of Royal Challengers Bangalore. The decision reflects the board's sensitivity towards the tragedy that occurred last year.

Devjeet Saikia's Statement

In an interview with a media outlet, Devjeet Saikia remarked,

“Due to the unfortunate incident on June 4 of last year, there will be no formal event on the opening day of IPL 2026 in Bengaluru. The BCCI is not organizing any cultural or entertainment program to honor the souls lost in the tragedy. However, we are planning a grand entertainment event on the final day (May 31) of IPL.”

Previously, in 2019, following the Pulwama attack that claimed the lives of around 40 CRPF personnel, the BCCI had also canceled the opening ceremony of IPL 12, redirecting the allocated funds to the victims' families.
