IPL 2025: Lucknow Super Giants Face Tough Decisions After Disappointing Season
Lucknow Super Giants Struggle in IPL 2025
In the 2025 IPL season, the management of Lucknow Super Giants has made a change in captaincy, yet the team's fortunes remain unchanged. Last season, they finished in seventh place, and this year, they find themselves in the same position. Expectations were high for Rishabh Pant, the most expensive player in IPL history, but he has failed to make a significant impact both with the bat and as a captain. Out of 12 matches this season, LSG has only managed to secure 5 victories, suffering losses in 7 games. Given this performance, the team's owners may be compelled to make some tough decisions regarding player retention.
Potential Player Releases Ahead of Mini Auction
Sanjeev Goenka, the owner of LSG, is reportedly considering releasing five players before the next season. The IPL rules allow for such changes, enabling the management to release players ahead of the mini-auction for IPL 2026 and bring in new talent. Among those potentially on the chopping block are captain Rishabh Pant, fast bowler Mayank Yadav, David Miller, Arshin Kulkarni, and Shamar Joseph.
Key Players Under Threat
Rishabh Pant's name stands out as a likely candidate for release, having scored only 135 runs in 12 matches this season, including just one half-century. Additionally, Mayank Yadav has had a disappointing season, participating in only two matches due to injury. Veteran batsman David Miller has also struggled, accumulating just 153 runs in 11 matches, leading the management to reconsider his future with the team. Furthermore, all-rounder Arshin Kulkarni and West Indies pacer Shamar Joseph, who spent the entire season on the bench, may also be let go.
Sanjeev Goenka's Reaction to the Season
Following the team's exit from playoff contention, Sanjeev Goenka took to social media to express his thoughts. He stated, 'IPL 2025 has been quite challenging, but there is still much to play for that inspires us. We have two matches left. Let’s play with pride and finish strong with resilience and victories.'
