International Boxing Championship Celebrates Legacy of Virbhadra Singh in Shimla

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 24: An International Professional Boxing Championship took place in Shimla on Monday, commemorating the 93rd birth anniversary of the late Virbhadra Singh, a six-time Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. The event attracted nearly 50 male and female professional boxers from five nations, including India, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Sri Lanka.
Honoring a Political Legacy
This championship, now in its third year, was attended by notable figures such as Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Himachal Pradesh Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania, and various Congress leaders. Vikramaditya Singh, the Public Works and Urban Development Minister and son of Virbhadra Singh, emphasized the importance of such sporting events in steering youth away from drug abuse and promoting healthier lifestyles.
Promoting Healthy Choices
Vikramaditya Singh stated, “On the 93rd birth anniversary of Raja Virbhadra Singh, our goal is to guide the youth of the state towards positive paths. This International Professional Boxing Championship is organized with that vision. Athletes from both Himachal Pradesh and abroad are participating, and we aim to combat the rising drug issue in our state while continuing the development initiatives started by my father.”
Empowering Women in Boxing
The event also showcased the increasing popularity of professional boxing in India, especially among female athletes. Manisha Thakur, a professional boxer from Himachal Pradesh, expressed her enthusiasm for the tournament, stating that it provides a vital platform for women to demonstrate their skills. She noted, “Many people are unaware that women can excel in boxing, and events like this help change that narrative. Professional boxing is on the rise in India, and I hope to inspire more women to join the sport.”
International Participation
Among the international competitors was Sri Lankan boxer Aasil Murajudeen, who shared his excitement about participating in India for the first time. He remarked, “India is a wonderful country, and my experience here has been fantastic. Competing in Shimla is a new challenge for me, and I feel well-prepared. Boxing is gaining traction in India, and it’s historic for Sri Lanka to send professional boxers here for such events.”

Organizers of the championship aim to not only promote professional boxing but also to inspire youth to engage in sports and avoid substance abuse, all while honoring the legacy of Virbhadra Singh and his contributions to the development of Himachal Pradesh.
