Inspiring Journey of Maya: Young Athlete Triumphs at Punjab State Championship
Maya's Remarkable Victory in Athletics
Nineteen-year-old Maya has made headlines by clinching the top spot in the 400-metre race at the Punjab State Senior Athletics Championship, which took place in Ludhiana on June 4 and 5.
She completed the race in an impressive time of 55.33 seconds, establishing herself as one of the championship's standout athletes.
Originating from Sitto Gunno village in Abohar, Maya's ascent in athletics is a testament to her determination, sacrifices, and resilience. Growing up in a family of farm laborers, she faced significant financial hardships alongside her six sisters and one brother.
Access to education was a challenge for her family, which struggled to make ends meet.
“I only began my schooling at the age of 10, after my father managed to construct a modest home for us,” Maya shared. Prior to that, the family resided in a single room at the fields where her father worked.
Maya's story gained traction when a local publication reported that her mother had sold her earrings to purchase a pair of professional spike shoes for her, which she wore for the first time during the U-20 Federation Cup in Bangalore, showcasing the financial hurdles she overcame to pursue her passion for athletics.
Currently, Maya trains in Jalandhar under the mentorship of coach Sarabjit Singh Happy, who she credits for his steadfast support throughout her athletic journey.
“He has been incredibly supportive,” Maya remarked, recognizing her coach's influence on her growth as an athlete.
Coach Sarabjit Singh Happy commended Maya's dedication and hard work. “Maya is a dedicated athlete. I have been assisting her since we first met. She shows great promise and has a bright future ahead,” he stated.
After her success in Ludhiana, Maya expressed her eagerness to keep improving and aims for greater achievements at the national level.
“I am now preparing for the upcoming national championship,” she stated with confidence.
