Inside the Family Culture of Chennai Super Kings: Insights from Mike Hussey
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are known for their unique team culture, which former player Mike Hussey recently discussed. He highlighted how MS Dhoni's open-door policy and relaxed environment create a familial bond among players. Dhoni's room serves as an informal lounge where players gather to discuss cricket and enjoy each other's company. This approach not only helps new players feel comfortable but also fosters trust within the team. Hussey also noted Dhoni's unconventional training methods, focusing more on batting than wicketkeeping. As CSK prepares for IPL 2026, the team's culture continues to be a defining aspect of its identity.

The Unique Atmosphere of Chennai Super Kings
For cricket enthusiasts, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) represent more than just a team; they embody a unique camaraderie among players and a distinctive internal culture. Recently, former CSK star Mike Hussey shared insights about how the closed-door guesthouse culture fostered a familial bond among the players.
During an episode of The Overlap Cricket Podcast, Hussey revealed that MS Dhoni's room transformed into an informal lounge for the team each IPL season. Players would frequently gather there to discuss cricket, enjoy each other's company, and even indulge in some shisha. Hussey remarked, “Dhoni is an incredible person. His room is always open. Anyone can drop by and sit. Players engage in cricket discussions and enjoy some shisha. It’s his way of socializing.”
This tradition has been echoed before, as former CSK batsman George Bailey noted that Dhoni often creates a relaxed environment to help new and young players feel at ease within the team. This approach breaks down hierarchies and fosters a trusting atmosphere, which has become a hallmark of the Chennai Super Kings.
Hussey also mentioned that Dhoni, regarded as one of the greatest wicketkeepers in cricket history, rarely practices wicketkeeping during training. “I’ve only seen him catch balls when testing new gloves. However, he dedicates hours to batting practice, facing thousands of balls,” Hussey explained.
As per the latest updates, Dhoni has been retained by Chennai Super Kings for IPL 2026. His open and trustworthy demeanor is a key reason why both former and current players refer to CSK as a “family” — a family built on trust, comfort, and a legendary figure whose door is always open.
