Brothers Launch Tier 1 Pickleball with a Mission

In Overland Park, two brothers have transformed a casual pickleball game into a thriving business. Their startup, Tier 1 Pickleball, was established by Samuel and Isaac Smith in February 2025, focusing on innovative paddle technology while also supporting military veterans and first responders.

The inspiration for their venture struck Samuel during a game when he experimented with bouncing a pickleball on his holster, leading him to consider creating paddles from similar materials. This idea evolved into a mission to bring a new paddle to market.

Tier 1 has already introduced two paddles, including the Patriot, crafted in the USA with advanced materials like a honeycomb polypropylene core and a dual-layer carbon fiber face. The company’s commitment to its mission is evident as they incorporate military metal sourced from combat zones into their paddles.

“This connection to our cause is significant,” Samuel noted. “We aim to honor those who have served our country.” Isaac, an active-duty Green Beret warrant officer, plays a crucial role in guiding the company’s vision. A portion of each sale is donated to organizations that assist veterans and first responders, reinforcing their commitment to a greater purpose.

The startup has gained traction with the help of industry experts, including Bob Lambrechts, a retired Navy reserves commander, who has joined their board and aided in patent processes. Samuel expressed gratitude for Lambrechts’ support, stating, “His involvement has been vital for our growth.”

Looking to the future, Tier 1 is developing a new paddle called the Alpha, which will feature patented technologies, including Kydex material typically used in holsters, and a layered surface design aimed at enhancing durability and spin. Lambrechts highlighted a common issue faced by players: the wear and tear on paddle surfaces, which can hinder performance.

“Our design for the Alpha paddle seeks to maintain surface roughness over time,” he explained. Samuel added that early tests suggest Kydex offers a unique feel at impact, potentially improving control and spin. “We believe this technology could redefine paddle design in the sport,” he stated.

With plans to finalize the Alpha paddle design by late 2026 and launch it in 2027, Tier 1 sold approximately 300 paddles last year and is expanding its presence through tournament sponsorships and community initiatives. For Samuel, the vision extends beyond mere business success. “We aspire to create a significant impact in the pickleball community, similar to what USAA has achieved in banking and insurance,” he concluded.
