IndiGo Flight Encounters Hailstorm While Traveling from Delhi to Srinagar

IndiGo Flight Faces Severe Weather Conditions
An IndiGo flight traveling from Delhi to Srinagar experienced unexpected hail on Wednesday. Initially, the pilot sought permission from Lahore air traffic control to navigate through Pakistani airspace to avoid the adverse weather, but this request was denied, according to sources on Thursday.
The aircraft was caught in a storm and hailstorm
This flight, carrying over 220 passengers including members of the Trinamool Congress, encountered hail and the pilot reported an 'emergency' situation to the air traffic control at Srinagar airport. Fortunately, the aircraft landed safely.
Sources indicated that while flying over Amritsar, the pilot recognized the deteriorating weather conditions and requested clearance from Lahore air traffic control to pass through Pakistani airspace.
Pakistan Denies Airspace Request
According to reports, the request to utilize Pakistani airspace was rejected by Lahore air traffic control. Consequently, the aircraft had to continue on its original route, facing severe turbulence and hail.
Tensions Between India and Pakistan
In light of the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Pakistan has closed its airspace to Indian aviation companies. India has reciprocated by restricting access to Pakistani airlines as well. IndiGo confirmed in a statement that flight 6E2142 from Delhi to Srinagar encountered sudden hail during its journey.
Crew Followed Established Protocols
The airline stated, “The flight and crew adhered to established protocols, and the aircraft landed safely in Srinagar. Upon arrival, the airport team attended to the passengers.” Among those on board was a five-member delegation from the Trinamool Congress, including Derek O’Brien, Nadimul Haque, Sagarika Ghosh, Manas Bhunia, and Mamata Thakur.
