India's Men's Table Tennis Team Defeated
On Sunday, India's men's table tennis team experienced a disappointing 0-3 loss to Iran during their Group F match at the Asian Games 2026. The tie was sealed when Nima Alamian triumphed over Harmeet Desai in a closely contested five-game match.
Nima clinched victory in the final game with a score of 11-2, concluding the match with game scores of 12-10, 13-15, 11-3, 10-12, and 11-2, thereby giving Iran an unassailable lead. Earlier in the match, Noshad Alamiyan had already secured a win against Manush Shah with scores of 11-3, 11-8, and 12-10, while Benyamin Faraji defeated Manav Thakkar with a scoreline of 11-2, 11-6, and 11-6.
Mixed Results in Table Tennis
This defeat followed a strong start for the Indian men's team, who had previously won their opening Group F match against Indonesia with a score of 3-0. Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, Manav Thakkar, and Manush Shah all secured victories in that match. Thakkar's match against Muhammad Junindra was particularly intense, ending with scores of 11-7, 8-11, 11-6, 6-11, and 11-9. Meanwhile, Shah won against Affan Pratama with scores of 11-9, 11-9, and 12-10. The Indian women's team also started strong, achieving a 3-0 victory over Indonesia before narrowly defeating Singapore 3-2 in another Group F match.
India's Successful Opening Day in Other Sports
India's first day at the Aichi-Nagoya Games was marked by impressive performances and medals across various sports. In shooting, Elavenil Valarivan earned a silver medal in the women's 10m air rifle individual final and, alongside Sonam Maskar and Vidarsa Vinod, secured another silver in the team event, contributing to India's medal tally. In mixed martial arts, Suchika Tariyal also claimed a medal after defeating Mongolia's Altanchimeg Baigalmaa in the women's traditional 60kg quarterfinal.
Strong Performances in Team Sports
The Indian women's hockey team kicked off their campaign with a remarkable 19-0 victory over Uzbekistan, while the men's team triumphed over Indonesia with a score of 13-1 in Pool A. Additionally, the Indian women's cricket team advanced to the gold-medal match after defeating Bangladesh in the semifinal, where they will face Sri Lanka, who won against Pakistan in the other semifinal. The women's badminton team also started their campaign with a solid 3-0 win over Kazakhstan.

In swimming, Rishabh Das finished sixth in the men's 100m backstroke final after qualifying fifth in the heats. Utkarsh Patil placed 12th in the heats, while Benediction Beniston and Akash Mani finished 12th and 23rd, respectively, in the men's 100m freestyle heats. In wushu, Suraj Singh Mayanglambam ended up 11th in the men's Changquan final, while Aparna Dahiya and Vikrant Baliyan were eliminated in their respective Sanda Round of 16 matches. In teqball, Quimcy Dsouza lost the women's singles bronze-medal match, and she, along with Mohamed Anas Beg, was defeated in the mixed doubles bronze-medal contest.
