Dominant Performance on Day One

Mullanpur: Sai Sudharsan showcased a blend of elegance and aggression, scoring an impressive 81 runs, while KL Rahul matched him with an unbeaten 81 as India reached a solid 209 for 2 at tea during the first day of the one-off Test against Afghanistan on Saturday.

Sudharsan, who has the backing of head coach Gautam Gambhir, received two lucky breaks but ultimately fell short of achieving his first Test century.

Rahul, a seasoned player, also had his share of fortune, combining caution with assertiveness as he approached his 12th Test century in his 68th match.

At the tea break, captain Shubman Gill was batting on 20, looking in fine form with four boundaries to his name.

The partnership between Rahul and Sudharsan yielded 139 runs off 185 balls, with the Tamil Nadu left-hander displaying significant intent throughout his innings.

There were moments of missed opportunities, including edges that evaded the slip cordon, which should have been caught.

Sudharsan's mastery was evident, with most of his 13 boundaries struck through the mid-wicket area, while a straight drive off pacer Mohammad Saleem was particularly delightful.

Rahul managed to survive what appeared to be a clear edge, as the Afghan bowlers opted not to appeal for a catch.

His innings featured nine boundaries, and aside from the unappealed edge, Rahul demonstrated excellent defensive skills, remaining largely untroubled by the Afghan bowling attack.

Earlier in the day, Yashasvi Jaiswal failed to build on a promising start, as India cautiously reached 96 for 1 at lunch. Jaiswal's dismissal was rather unfortunate, as he attempted to play a delivery from Saleem that bounced slightly higher, only to edge it to keeper Afsar Zazai.
