India's Boxing Stars Set for World Championships in Liverpool
India's Boxing Team Announced for World Championships
New Delhi, Jul 25: Prominent Indian boxers Lovlina Borgohain and Nikhat Zareen have been officially selected for the national team heading to the World Championships in Liverpool this September.
The final roster of 20 athletes was determined following a week-long evaluation at the National Institute of Sports (NIS) in Patiala.
This championship, scheduled from September 4 to 14, marks the inaugural event organized by the newly established governing body, World Boxing.
For the first time, the competition will showcase both male and female boxers vying for the title of World Boxing Champion across 10 weight categories, resembling an Olympic-style format.
Both Zareen and Borgohain had previously missed the women's national championships in March.
Zareen, a two-time world champion, was sidelined due to an injury, while Borgohain, who earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics, could not participate as her state association opted not to send her due to internal conflicts.
Earlier this month, the pair competed in the Elite Women's Boxing Tournament in Hyderabad to rejoin the national camp, although they also missed the recent World Cup held in Astana.
