India's Test Squad Dilemma

As discussions heat up regarding India's lineup for the initial Test against England, the batting order seems nearly set. However, the bowling selection remains a contentious topic. Many experts advocate for the inclusion of two spinners at Headingley, a strategy that was rarely employed during the previous season in England or in Australia, except for one match.

Given that the Headingley pitch may not favor bowlers significantly, it is crucial to have a robust bowling lineup to mitigate injury risks through effective workload management. Bharat Arun, the former bowling coach of India, emphasizes the necessity of fielding five genuine bowlers.

Bowling Choices and Strategy

When asked about the potential bowlers, Arun confidently identified Mohammed Siraj and Jasprit Bumrah as essential picks. For the third pace bowler, he suggested Arshdeep Singh over Akash Deep and Prasidh Krishna, citing Arshdeep's ability to swing the ball as a valuable asset in English conditions, along with his left-arm bowling style.

“Siraj and Bumrah are obvious choices. The other two bowlers would be a toss-up... I would definitely opt for Arshdeep because being a left-hander, not many players get to practice against left-handers, even in the nets. So, it’s not always straightforward. Especially if there is a skillful left-hander, he becomes all the more potent,”

The Case for Kuldeep Yadav

Arun also highlighted the importance of including Kuldeep Yadav in the squad, drawing parallels to Shane Warne's effectiveness against English batsmen. He believes that with both Kuldeep and Ravindra Jadeja, India would have a formidable bowling attack.

Kuldeep has historically posed challenges for English batsmen, particularly with his wrist spin, which can exploit rough patches on the pitch. Arun is confident that Kuldeep's impact would be significantly felt in the second innings, making him a strategic choice.

“Wrist spinners have always been effective, especially in England. Initially, when there is a bit of dampness in the wicket, there is help for those wrist spinners. And also, the roughs that the bowlers create. But again, using the rough is a separate art,”

“It’s not just about bowling. Shane Warne comes to mind. Kuldeep has the skills to succeed in England. This bowling attack may be relatively inexperienced, but it has immense potential. I would play Kuldeep Yadav. Even if not in the first innings, he would be a handful to deal with in the second,”
