Okazaki, Oct 1: India's quest for its first men's volleyball medal at the Asian Games since 1986 has come to an end following a straight-set loss to Pakistan in the quarterfinals at Aichi-Nagoya 2026 on Thursday.
In a match held at Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Gymnasium, Pakistan triumphed over India with scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-18, securing a spot in the semifinals. This victory marks Pakistan's first top-four finish in volleyball at the Asian Games in 64 years.
The match began competitively, with both teams tied at 11-11. However, Pakistan surged ahead by scoring five consecutive points, establishing a 16-11 lead in the first set, which they ultimately won 25-19.
In the second set, India initially led 19-16 but faltered due to a series of errors, allowing Pakistan to take control and lead 2-0. The third set saw Pakistan maintain dominance, concluding the match with a score of 25-19, 25-23, 25-18.
India entered this knockout stage undefeated, having topped Pool C with three victories. Their campaign began with a 3-0 win against Vietnam, followed by another 3-0 victory over Hong Kong China.
In a thrilling final pool match against Qatar, India staged a remarkable comeback after losing the first two sets, winning the match 3-2 with scores of 26-28, 25-27, 25-23, 25-20, and 24-22, which secured their quarterfinal berth.
Historically, India has won three medals in men's volleyball at the Asian Games: a silver in Jakarta 1962 and bronze medals in Tokyo 1958 and Seoul 1986. In contrast, Pakistan has claimed one medal, a bronze in Jakarta 1962, the same year India earned silver.
