Indian Free Style Wrestling Team's Stellar Performance
The 2025 Senior Asian Wrestling Championship wrapped up in Amman, Jordan, showcasing an outstanding display by the Indian Free Style wrestling squad.
On the championship's concluding day, the remaining five weight categories in free-style wrestling were contested, where Indian athletes demonstrated their prowess and determination.
In these categories, Udit (61 kg) and Deepak Punia (92 kg) advanced to the finals vying for gold, while Mukul Dahiya (86 kg) and Dinesh (125 kg) competed for bronze medals.
Udit, competing in the 61 kg division, earned his second consecutive silver medal at the Senior Asian Championship, having previously secured silver in the 57 kg category last year.
Exhibiting exceptional technique, he overcame Kyrgyz wrestler Bekbolot Myrzanazar Ullu with a score of 9-6 in the quarter-finals and defeated Chinese wrestler Wanhao Zou 2-0 in the semi-finals.
Despite a valiant effort in the final, he was edged out by Japan's Takara Suda, finishing with a score of 6-4 and settling for silver.
Deepak Punia, in the 92 kg category, also delivered an impressive performance, defeating Kyrgyz wrestler Bekzat Rakhimov 12-7 in the quarter-finals and dominating Japan's Takashi Ishiguro 8-1 in the semi-finals.
However, he faced a setback in the final against Iranian wrestler Amirhossein Biglar, losing 10-0 and securing a silver medal.
Dinesh Kumar (125 kg) showed remarkable resilience in a tough match against Turkmenistani wrestler Zyyamuhammet Saparov, clinching the bronze medal with a 12-12 victory based on technical superiority.
Unfortunately, Mukul Dahiya (86 kg) narrowly missed out on a bronze, losing to Japan's Tatsuya Shirai by a close 4-2 margin.
In total, the Indian Free Style Wrestling Team concluded the championship with an impressive haul of two silver and one bronze medal on the final day.
Overall, the Indian contingent achieved a remarkable tally of one gold, three silver, and six bronze medals throughout the championship, marking a significant achievement in the nation's wrestling history.
