India's Fielding Woes Continue in T20 World Cup

During their crucial ICC Women's T20 World Cup match against Bangladesh on June 25 at Old Trafford, the Indian women's cricket team repeated past errors, leading to a disappointing performance. The team struggled significantly in the field, dropping four catches within the initial overs of the innings. In the third over, Yastika Bhatia missed a catch off Sree Charani's bowling, allowing Juairiya Ferdous to escape. Radha Yadav also failed to catch Ferdous later in the innings. Additionally, Nandani Sharma dropped two consecutive catches off Charani's fifth over, missing both Sobhana Mostary and Ferdous.

India's Poor Fielding Record in the Tournament

This lackluster fielding is not an isolated incident but rather a recurring issue for the Women in Blue throughout the tournament. In their opening match against Pakistan, the team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, dropped three catches during the powerplay. They also missed three opportunities from Marizanne Kapp, which ultimately cost them the match, as Kapp scored an impressive 81 runs off 45 balls.

Historic Fielding Failures

India has now set an unfortunate record in this tournament, being the only team to drop three or more catches during the powerplay in two separate matches—against both Pakistan and Bangladesh. This match marked the first time in Women's T20 World Cup history that a team dropped four catches within the first six overs. Previously, a similar occurrence happened only once in a women's T20 match, when Bangladesh dropped four catches against Sri Lanka in 2025. Furthermore, this is the first recorded instance of a team dropping four catches in the first five overs of a women's T20I match.
