Indian Team Shines at ASEAN Chess Championship

Mumbai, Aug 19: The Indian under-11 girls' chess team has proudly claimed a bronze medal at the esteemed ASEAN Chess Championship, which took place at the Tampines Hub in Singapore, showcasing their talent on an international platform.

The team, featuring Varenya Lakshmi Vaka and Aligiri Amrutha Hemal from Andhra Pradesh, along with Maya Siddharth Narula from Mumbai, who plays for the Mumbai Chess Centre (MCC), delivered a commendable performance, finishing with a total of 14.5 points.

Vietnam emerged victorious, securing the gold medal with an impressive score of 19.5 points, while Singapore took home the silver with 14.5 points. India also achieved 14.5 points but earned the bronze due to the tie-break rules of the tournament.

This championship, concluding on Tuesday night, attracted over 700 participants from 27 nations, marking it as one of the significant junior chess events in the region.

The Indian players exhibited remarkable determination and consistency throughout the competition, facing off against some of Asia's top junior talents. Their performance underscores the increasing strength and depth of Indian junior chess across various age groups.

Durga Nagesh Guttula, the chief coach at Mumbai Chess Centre (MCC), commented on the team's success, stating: “Our players have excelled at this championship, reaffirming the strength and depth of Indian junior chess. It is particularly encouraging to see our players competing effectively across different age categories and events.”

He further emphasized, “These international competitions offer invaluable exposure to our young talents, aiding in their development of the confidence and experience necessary to excel at the highest levels.”

Historically, Indian teams have performed admirably in age-group chess, consistently winning medals at both continental and global stages, excelling in classical, rapid, and blitz formats.
