Victorious Start for Indian Players
Lakshya Sen, the Commonwealth Games champion from India, kicked off his campaign at the India Open with a decisive victory against fellow Indian Ayush Shetty on Tuesday. In this match, Lakshya showcased his skills, allowing very few opportunities for the young player, who had previously won the US Open title, and secured the win in straight games with scores of 21-12 and 21-15.
Women's Doubles Success
The women's doubles team of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand, ranked eighth, also had a successful outing, defeating Thailand's Ornnicha Jonggsathapornparn and Sukitta Suwachai with a score of 21-15, 21-11.
Mixed Doubles and Other Matches
Unfortunately, the mixed doubles duo of Dhruv Rawat and Maneesha K faced an early exit in the first round, as did the women's doubles pair of Priya Konjegbam and Shruti Mishra.
India Open 2026 Tournament Overview
The India Open 2026, classified as a World Tour Super 750 event, is taking place from January 13 to 18. This tournament serves as a precursor to the upcoming World Championships 2026, with matches being held in the expansive multi-purpose hall at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, promising fans an enhanced viewing experience.
As in previous years, this edition has drawn top badminton talent from around the globe, including World Champions Shi Yu Qi from China, women's world number one An Se Young, and BWF World Tour Finals champion Christo Popov. Over the next five days, a total of 256 players from 20 different countries will compete, with Chinese Taipei sending the largest contingent of 36 players.
