Dominant Performances by Indian Players

Ontario, Canada - July 4: Three Indian badminton players showcased impressive performances to secure their spots in the quarterfinals of the Canada Open 2025. Kidambi Srikanth, Shriyanshi Valishetty, and S Sankar Muthusamy Subramanian all achieved straight-game victories in their respective Round of 16 matches.


Facing world No. 71 Wang Po-Wei from Chinese Taipei at the Markham Pan Am Centre, Kidambi Srikanth triumphed with scores of 21-19, 21-14, according to reports from Olympics.com. Despite trailing 18-13 at one point, Srikanth rallied to win the first game and overcame a 10-13 deficit in the second to finish the match in just 41 minutes.


Having recently finished as the runner-up at the Malaysia Masters in May, Srikanth is set to compete against top seed and Olympian Chou Tien-chen from Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals.


Joining him in the quarter-finals is compatriot Sankar Subramanian, currently ranked 57th in the world. He secured his place with a 21-19, 21-14 victory over Huang Yu Kai of Chinese Taipei, who is ranked 63rd. Sankar will face Olympian and world No. 12 Kenta Nishimoto from Japan next, a player he previously lost to in straight games at the Orleans Masters in March.


In the women's singles category, Shriyanshi Valishetty, ranked 75th, also advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating world No. 45 Letshanaa Karupathevan from Malaysia with scores of 21-15, 21-14 in 35 minutes. She is set to meet world No. 69 Amalie Schulz from Denmark, whom she previously defeated at the Abu Dhabi Masters in 2023.


Unfortunately, India's doubles campaign at the Canada Open concluded on Wednesday, as mixed doubles top seeds Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto were eliminated by Spain's Ruben Garcia and Lucia Rodriguez.
