The Picklebay Zonals - North event is currently underway in Gurgaon, showcasing top players as they prepare for the senior selection trials for the upcoming Pickleball World Cup. Aalap Sharma, the Director of the Indian Pickleball Association and Secretary of the Gujarat State Pickleball Association, expressed optimism about the new generation of players making their mark internationally. He highlighted that athletes like Arjun Singh are proving that Indian pickleball is ready to compete on a global scale.
Sharma stated, "The players you mentioned are indeed the future stars of Indian pickleball, and we can confidently assert that they have made their presence felt on the world stage." He emphasized that the growth of pickleball in India is just beginning, with expectations for more talented players to emerge in the coming years, potentially competing at the highest levels.
In anticipation of a significant announcement from the Indian Pickleball Association, Sharma hinted at exciting news to be revealed soon, urging fans to stay tuned. "It's going to be something big," he remarked.
This year's Picklebay Zonals - North holds special importance as it serves as the senior selection trials for the Pickleball World Cup, which is set to take place in Da Nang from August 30 to September 6. Reflecting on India's previous performance, Sharma noted that while finishing seventh was commendable, there is a desire for improvement.
"We were the only Asian nation to break into the top 10, but we aim for more," he said, adding that the federation is focusing on enhancing both physical fitness and technical skills. "Our plans this time are more comprehensive, with a strong emphasis on fitness and mindset, as we believe Indian players need to elevate their physical standards," Sharma explained.
Looking ahead to the World Cup, Sharma expressed hopes for a better outcome, aiming for more gold medals and a transformation of last year's team event bronze into gold this year.
