Indian Pickleball League Gears Up for Exciting Second Season
The Rise of Pickleball in India
As pickleball gains traction in India, the Indian Pickleball League (IPBL) stands out as a hallmark of professionalism, reflecting the increasing confidence of investors in the sport's global expansion. Sanctioned by the Indian Pickleball Association, the IPBL is preparing for its second season following a successful debut in December 2025 in New Delhi, where the Mumbai Smashers clinched the championship title in a thrilling tournament.
During the inaugural season, Indian athletes such as Harsh Mehta, Arjun Singh, Pearl Amalsadiwala, Shreya Chakraborty, and Naomi Amalsadiwala showcased their skills alongside international players, significantly enhancing their performance levels. This exposure allowed them to realize their potential under the watchful eyes of fans and competitors alike, making strategy a crucial element of the competition.
Indian players often outperformed their foreign rivals, with the IPBL serving as a launchpad for local talent. Arjun Singh notably triumphed at the US Open Pickleball Championship, securing three gold medals, while Aditya Ruhela signed a deal with the PPA Tour, and Harsh Mehta joined the APP Tour. Recently, Arjun and Naomi reached the finals of the BIDV Cup after impressive victories over Quang Duong and Shelby Bates, followed by a semifinal win against Richard Livornese Jr. and Megan Fudge.
Upcoming IPBL Season and the Lucknow Leopards Championship
Preparing for a Grand Second Season
Efforts are underway to make the second season of the IPBL even more spectacular. The Lucknow Leopards, a key franchise in the league, announced the Lucknow Leopards Championship on June 26 during a pickleball event in Gurgaon, reaffirming their commitment to advancing the sport in India. This tournament will be the richest in the country, boasting a total prize pool of Rs 10 lakh, with each of the five professional categories offering Rs 2 lakh.
To facilitate the upcoming season, the IPA has introduced the Road to IPBL program, which allows standout players to qualify for the IPBL Player Auction, giving them a chance to represent a franchise in the league. The Lucknow Leopards Championship will be a part of this initiative, designated as a PWR 700 event, providing players with vital national ranking points, among the highest in domestic pickleball tournaments in India. Consequently, top players from across the nation are expected to participate.
Scheduled for August 22 and 23 at Bennett University, the Lucknow Leopards Championship presents a golden opportunity for players to enhance their chances of securing an IPBL contract. Excelling in categories such as Pro Men's Singles, Pro Men's Doubles, Pro Women's Singles, Pro Women's Doubles, or Pro Mixed Doubles could fast-track players into the talent scouting process for the league's six franchises, including the Lucknow Leopards, who aim to improve upon their third-place finish from the previous season.
A Platform for Emerging Talent
Shaleen Jain, a representative of the Lucknow Leopards, expressed enthusiasm about the tournament's launch, stating, "This is a fantastic opportunity as we refer to it as the Road to IPBL. The IPBL has become one of the most prestigious tournaments in the country." The Lucknow Leopards Championship is significant as it provides players with a platform to shine, attract franchise owners' attention, and secure professional contracts. With the country's top players expected to compete, the championship is set to become one of the most awaited pickleball events in India.
Shaleen emphasized the competitive nature of the tournament, noting, "If you're skilled enough and the IPBL takes notice, you could be fast-tracked into the auction list, even if you weren't considered last year. This is a great opportunity to measure yourself against the best players in the country."
A Premium Career Accelerator
Setting New Standards in Indian Pickleball
Aalap Sharma, Treasurer of the Indian Pickleball Association, described the Lucknow Leopards Championship as a premium career accelerator in Indian pickleball, calling it the most prestigious tournament combo. He highlighted the tournament's financial appeal, which is expected to set new benchmarks in the sport. "With IPA-PWR 700 points, winners can leap into national contention, altering their career paths overnight. The fixed Rs 2 lakh per category prize, unlike variable pools in other tournaments, establishes a new standard for financial rewards in Indian pickleball," he stated.
As the Lucknow Leopards Championship becomes a key event on the Road to IPBL, Aalap noted that exceptional performances could lead to professional opportunities for players. "Performances here serve as auditions for league franchises, and selectors will be closely observing. Impressing at this event could result in contracts, sponsorships, and entry into India’s first professional pickleball ecosystem," he concluded.
