Indian Men's Team Faces Tough Challenge in Thomas Cup Quarterfinals
Challenging Quarterfinals Ahead
The Indian men's badminton team has encountered a challenging draw in the quarterfinals of the Thomas Cup, as revealed during the knockout stage draw held on April 30 in Horsens, Denmark. After finishing second in Group A with a 2-3 loss to China, India is set to compete against Chinese Taipei, who topped Group C after defeating the host nation, Denmark, 3-2.
India, the reigning champions from the 2022 Thomas Cup, missed a golden opportunity to lead their group after securing victories against Canada and Australia. Lakshya Sen, who opened the singles matches, struggled against Li Shifeng, losing 19-21, 21-8, 21-12, marking his second defeat in the tournament after an earlier loss to Viktor Lai of Canada. In men's doubles, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty squandered a 16-12 lead in the final set against Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang, ultimately losing 13-21, 21-13, 24-26. However, Ayush Shetty and HS Prannoy delivered thrilling wins against Weng Hong Yang and Lu Guang Zu.
Chinese Taipei's Strength
Chinese Taipei is not to be underestimated, especially after their impressive group performance. They began with a dominant 5-0 win but faced a setback against South Korea. In a crucial match against Denmark, Chi Yu Jen showcased his resilience by saving five match points to secure a 21-11, 9-11, 27-25 victory, propelling his team to the knockout stage as group leaders. Denmark advanced as the second-best team, while South Korea was eliminated.
Chinese Taipei boasts a well-rounded squad, featuring top singles players Chou Tien Chen, Lin Chun-Yi, and Chi Yu Jen, along with a strong doubles pair in Chiu Hsiang Chieh and Wang Chi-Lin. Chou is expected to face Lakshya in the opening singles match, with their head-to-head record currently tied at 4-4. Their last encounter was at the Australian Open in 2025, where Lakshya emerged victorious. Both players are coming off losses, setting the stage for an exciting showdown. Lakshya, known for his current form, must elevate his game to secure an early advantage for India. However, Chou's tenacity and ability to wear down opponents will pose a significant challenge.
Ayush, the only Indian player yet to lose in this year's Thomas Cup, will likely compete against Lin Chun-Yi in the second singles match. Lin previously defeated Ayush at the Orleans Masters in 2025, but Ayush has since transformed into a silver medallist at the Badminton Asia Championships. Lin, who recently won the All England Open, will be eager to prove himself against Ayush, who is currently ranked 8th.
In men's doubles, Satwik and Chirag need to shake off their recent rustiness to perform well. As the heroes of the 2022 Thomas Cup, they must capitalize on their previous 2-0 head-to-head advantage against their opponents, Chiu Hsiang Chieh and Wang Chi-Lin, who recently defeated Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard.
Prannoy's Resurgence
Despite the loss to China revealing some weaknesses in India's lineup, HS Prannoy's return to form is a positive sign. He showcased his skills in a thrilling three-game match against Lu Guang Zu, winning 20-22, 21-19, 21-11. Prannoy's performance is crucial as he faces Chi Yu Jen, who also delivered a remarkable win under pressure to secure Chinese Taipei's quarterfinal spot.
If India triumphs over Chinese Taipei, they will advance to face the winner of the quarterfinal match between France and Japan. Japan, the 2014 champions, will encounter a challenging match against France, who previously upset 14-time champions Indonesia. Meanwhile, defending champions China will compete against Malaysia, and host Denmark will take on Thailand.
