Suraj Karkera Reflects on Missing Pakistan Rivalry

Suraj Karkera, the goalkeeper for the Indian men's hockey team, expressed that the absence of matches against their long-standing rivals, Pakistan, will be felt during the upcoming Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) in Punjab 2026. Despite this, he emphasized that the team is committed to delivering their best performance.

Bangladesh Takes Pakistan's Place in the Tournament

In a significant change, Bangladesh has stepped in for Pakistan in the Asian Champions Trophy after Pakistan withdrew from the six-team tournament. This event is set to take place from October 27 to November 5 at two venues in Punjab: the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar and the Olympian Balbir Singh Senior International Hockey Stadium in Mohali.

Pakistan's Withdrawal Explained

The Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) president, Mohyuddin Ahmed Wani, mentioned last month that the team's participation in the ACT was contingent upon government approval, and they would adhere to any directives from the authorities, as reported in September.

India's Dominance Over Pakistan in Recent Matches

India and Pakistan have a storied rivalry in hockey, with India winning 18 out of their last 20 encounters since 2016, while Pakistan has yet to secure a victory. The last match between the two teams occurred during the semifinals of the 2026 Asian Games, where India triumphed with a score of 4-3.

Karkera on the Impact of Missing the Rivalry

Speaking to the media at a ceremony honoring Indian Army athletes, Suraj Karkera acknowledged that while athletes prefer not to withdraw from competitions, such decisions are often beyond their control. He noted that fans would miss the excitement of the India-Pakistan matches, but the team remains focused on their performance.

India Enters as Tournament Favorites

With Bangladesh replacing Pakistan, the Asian Champions Trophy will now feature India, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, China, and Bangladesh. India, the reigning champions and recent gold medalists at the Asian Games, will enter the tournament as the top-ranked team, aiming to maintain their strong legacy.

Motivation from COAS Felicitation

Karkera, who also serves as a Subedar in the Indian Army, stated that the commendation and awards from the Chief of Army Staff serve as a significant source of motivation for the team, inspiring them to strive for excellence in future competitions.

Preparing for Future Challenges

Looking ahead to the LA 2028 Olympics, Karkera mentioned that the team plans to address their previous mistakes and elevate their performance standards. They are eager to defend their title at the Asian Champions Trophy, which will be held on home soil.
