Lalit Kumar Upadhyay's Retirement Announcement

On June 22, 2025, Indian forward Lalit Kumar Upadhyay officially announced his retirement from international hockey. Despite stepping back from the international scene, he will continue to participate in domestic and league matches. This marks the conclusion of a remarkable career that spanned over a decade, during which Upadhyay achieved significant milestones, including winning bronze medals at both the Paris and Tokyo Olympics.


During his career, Upadhyay played four out of eight matches for India in Europe, which were part of the 2024-25 Pro League season. His final international appearance was against Australia on June 15. Over his career, he represented India in 183 senior international matches, scoring 67 goals. Additionally, he serves as a Deputy Superintendent of Police in the Uttar Pradesh Police.


In a heartfelt message on his social media, Lalit reflected on his journey, stating, 'This journey began in a small village with limited resources but boundless dreams. From facing a sting operation to standing on the Olympic podium not once, but twice, this path has been filled with challenges, growth, and unforgettable glory. Becoming an Olympian from my town after 26 years is something I will cherish with honor and gratitude.'


The 31-year-old athlete expressed his gratitude to those who played pivotal roles in his career. He thanked his first coach, Mr. Paramanand Mishra, for introducing him to hockey and laying the foundation for his success. He also acknowledged Harendra Sir for giving him his first break at Air India, along with Samir Bhai and Dhanraj Sir for their guidance during crucial times.


Continuing his acknowledgments, he expressed appreciation for BPCL for offering him a job and providing eight meaningful years of work and growth. He thanked his friends and colleagues for making this journey memorable and Hockey India for the opportunity to wear the national jersey. He also expressed gratitude to the state government for honoring his journey by appointing him as DSP, a responsibility he takes pride in.


In closing, he thanked the current captain of India, Harmanpreet Singh, stating, 'Hockey has given me everything, and you are one of its greatest gifts, brother.'
