Indian Golfers Begin Strong at Women's Australian Open
Solid Starts for Indian Golfers
Adelaide [Australia], March 12: Indian golfers Diksha Dagar and Vani Kapoor kicked off their campaigns at the Women's Australian Open with commendable performances, both finishing the first round at an even-par 72, placing them tied for 24th on the leaderboard. Their efforts keep them within striking distance of the leaders as the tournament commenced at Kooyonga Golf Club.
While Diksha and Vani had a steady start, the day proved challenging for their fellow Indian competitors. Hitaashee Bakshi and Avani Prashanth both recorded scores of 77, landing them in a tie for 98th place, making it a tough road ahead to qualify for the 36-hole cut. Pranavi Urs struggled further down the leaderboard with a first-round score of 78.
Leading the pack, Darcey Harry and Alexandra Forsterling showcased remarkable skill, with Harry shooting a six-under-par 66 and Forsterling closely following with a five-under-par 67. Both players took advantage of the calmer morning conditions, finishing strong by sinking eagle putts on the par-5 ninth hole, their final hole of the day.
Diksha began her round from the 10th tee, experiencing a mixed bag of results. Her first nine holes included three birdies, two bogeys, and a double bogey on the 17th hole, which was her eighth hole of the round. She regained her composure on the back nine, though a bogey on the fourth hole hindered her progress. Nevertheless, birdies on the sixth and ninth holes allowed her to finish at even par.
Vani Kapoor, who received a sponsor's invitation, also had a strong start. She secured birdies on the second and fifth holes but dropped a shot on the ninth, turning at one-under par. After adding another birdie on the tenth, she faced difficulties towards the end, recording bogeys on the 13th, 15th, and 17th holes. A birdie on the 16th helped mitigate the impact, allowing her to finish with a level-par score.
Welsh golfer Darcey Harry, the previous year's champion at the Hulencourt Women’s Open on the Ladies European Tour, delivered an impressive round with five birdies and only one dropped shot at the 11th hole. Forsterling, a four-time LET champion, had a standout moment by holing out from 114 yards for an eagle on the par-4 13th and added another eagle later in her round.
American rookie Anna Morgan stands alone in third place at four-under par after achieving the best afternoon round despite windy conditions, finishing with a birdie on the ninth hole.
Six players are tied for fourth place at three-under par: Emma Spitz from Austria, Kelsey Bennett from Australia, Alessandra Fanali from Italy, Annabell Fuller from England, and French players Agathe Laisne and Celine Herbin.
