Introduction of Icon Stars in IGPL

The Indian Golf Premier League (IGPL) has officially announced the addition of three prominent figures in golf—Shiv Kapur, Gaurav Ghei, and SSP Chawrasia—as icon stars for its inaugural season. These seasoned players will lead their respective franchises in this groundbreaking league.

Vision for Transformation in Indian Golf

During a virtual press conference, the trio shared their insights on the potential of IGPL to significantly alter the perception and practice of golf in India. According to a press release from IGPL, this league marks the first professional tour in the country to feature both male and female golfers competing on the same platform, alongside regional circuits.

Aiming for Inclusivity and Empowerment

The league's innovative format is designed to redefine golf in India, promoting inclusivity and empowering athletes. Shiv Kapur, a gold medalist from the 2002 Asian Games and an Arjuna Award recipient, expressed that IGPL could mirror the positive influence the Indian Premier League (IPL) has had on cricket.

Support from Cricket Legend Yuvraj Singh

In an exciting development, cricket icon Yuvraj Singh has joined IGPL as a co-owner and brand ambassador. The league has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Golf Union (IGU), the governing body for men's amateur golf in India. Additionally, a partnership with the Women’s Golf Association of India (WGAI) aims to enhance women's golf and support female athletes.

Innovative Format and New Opportunities

SSP Chawrasia, a 2017 Arjuna Award winner, praised the league's unique format, which allows men and women to compete together, stating that it presents a fresh approach to the sport. He believes this initiative will benefit both current and aspiring golfers.

Building a Stronger Golf Community

To nurture talent, IGPL plans to host tours in various cities leading up to the league's first edition, scheduled between September and December. Gaurav Ghei emphasized the need for innovation in golf, noting that the league's format and tours will attract a younger audience and enhance the overall experience for players.

Mentorship and Development Initiatives

IGPL is committed to transforming the golfing landscape by facilitating mentorship opportunities for amateurs through collaborations with international talent and legends. The league will focus on grassroots development and establish connections with schools and universities across India.
