Indian Boxing Team Heads to China for International Youth Tournament
Indian Contingent Arrives in Urumqi for Boxing Gala
A contingent of 59 Indian boxers has landed in Urumqi, Xinjiang, China, to take part in the 3rd "Belt and Road" International Youth Boxing Gala, which includes an U17/U19/U23 International Training Camp and Tournament. This event is set to run from August 15 to 30, as announced by the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).
The team consists of 20 male and 20 female athletes, accompanied by 12 coaches, 6 support staff members, and 1 Referee & Judge (R&J).
Hosted by the Chinese Boxing Federation and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region Government, the event will kick off with a training camp from August 17 to 25, followed by competitions from August 26 to 29 in Urumqi and Yili.
This year, only U-17 boys and girls will represent India. The selection was made based on performances at the 6th U-17 Junior Boys & Girls National Boxing Championships 2025, focusing on gold and silver medalists in the Asian Youth Games weight categories and gold medalists in Non-Asian Youth Games categories.
Competitors will participate in 13 weight divisions for U17 boys and girls, including categories such as 46kg, 48kg, 50kg, 52kg, 54kg, 57kg, 60kg, 63kg, 66kg, 70kg, 75kg, 80kg, and +80kg.
Engaging in this international training camp and tournament is anticipated to offer India's young boxers significant exposure and experience against formidable global competitors.
Recently, Indian junior boxers have showcased impressive performances in international events, particularly at the Asian U-15 and U-17 Championships earlier this year, where they earned 43 medals and secured a second-place finish overall.
These achievements highlight the increasing strength of grassroots boxing in India and the potential of its upcoming athletes on the international stage.
