New Delhi [India], July 8: Following her impressive gold medal win at the World Boxing Cup Astana 2025, Indian boxer Nupur has called on the nation to rally behind boxing with the same enthusiasm shown for cricket. She shared insights about her title match.
Nupur faced off against Kazakhstan's Yeldana Talipova in the 80+kg final, initially struggling as Talipova took the first round. However, Nupur turned the tide in the subsequent rounds, showcasing her skills and strategy to secure a decisive 5:0 victory.
Reflecting on her triumph, Nupur stated, “On July 6, I competed in the finals of the World Cup in Kazakhstan, where I clinched the gold medal in the 80 kg plus category. It was an exhilarating experience. My opponent was from the host country and ranked number 2 in the world, having recently earned a silver medal at the world championship. The local audience is passionate about boxing, and I hope they support it as fervently as they do cricket.”
In the 57 kg category, Jaismine Lamboria utilized her reach effectively against her Brazilian rival in the final round, maintaining distance and executing counterattacks to secure a narrow victory.
Jaismine expressed her joy, saying, “At the World Cup in Kazakhstan, I represented India and performed exceptionally well, winning the gold medal. I fought four matches, and in the finals, the decision was close at 3-2. Thanks to my coach's strategy, we emerged victorious.”
Sakshi also delivered an outstanding performance against Yosline Perez from the USA, earning a unanimous decision in the women’s 54kg final. Jaismine maintained her composure to defeat Jucielen Cequeira Romeu of Brazil 4:1 in the women’s 57kg category.
On her victory, Sakshi remarked, “It feels amazing to win; the competition was intense with many skilled opponents. I won all my bouts by 5-0. The toughest match was against the USA, but I managed to secure unanimous decisions in all my fights. Many competitors in my category were Olympic medalists, making it a challenging event.”
The Indian boxing team concluded the tournament with an impressive tally of 11 medals, comprising three gold, five silver, and three bronze medals. Earlier, they had secured six medals in the first leg held in Brazil, including one gold and one silver.
