Confidence Soars Ahead of World Boxing Championships
Sheffield [UK], September 3: Dharmendra Singh Yadav, the coach of the Indian men's boxing team, expressed strong optimism as the inaugural World Boxing Championships 2025 approaches, scheduled from September 4 to 14 at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool. He praised the team's preparation in Sheffield, describing it as "exceptional" and emphasized the ideal mix of seasoned athletes and promising newcomers ready to shine on the international stage. The Indian boxers are prepared to face elite competitors across various weight classes, fully equipped to tackle the challenges that lie ahead, according to a statement from the Boxing Federation of India (BFI).
Yadav stated, "Our training in Sheffield has been remarkable. This squad combines experienced fighters who have previously stood on the podium with a fresh wave of talented young boxers eager to make their presence felt. We have complete faith in this group and are ready for every challenge the World Championships will present to us."
Chandralal, who coaches the women's team, remarked, "The commitment and effort displayed by this team are truly motivating. We have laid a solid foundation, and now we are set to demonstrate the fighting spirit of Indian women's boxing."
With Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain and World Champion Nikhat Zareen leading the charge, twenty Indian boxers will compete against some of the world's best in various categories. This biennial event will showcase top amateur boxers globally, with India entering in excellent form after securing 17 medals at the World Boxing Cups in Brazil and Kazakhstan earlier this year.
India is riding a wave of success, having achieved impressive results in recent international events. At the World Boxing Cup in Brazil, the Indian team earned six medals, including a gold for Hitesh and a silver for Abhinash Jamwal, along with four bronze medals. This success continued in Kazakhstan, where the team collected 11 additional medals, including three golds, showcasing their consistency and depth. Nupur Sheoran also clinched gold in the heavyweight category, highlighting India's competitive edge across all divisions.
The Indian contingent for the World Boxing Championships is bolstered by the presence of Lovlina Borgohain (75 kg) and two-time World Champion Nikhat Zareen (51 kg), who bring a wealth of experience and skill to the team. Other accomplished athletes include Hitesh (70 kg), Abhinash (65 kg), Nupur (80+ kg), Pooja Rani (80 kg), Minakshi (48 kg), Sakshi (54 kg), Jaismine (57 kg), Sanju (60 kg), Neeraj Phogat (65 kg), and T. Sanamacha Chanu (70 kg).
The squad is further strengthened by emerging male talents such as Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (50 kg), Pawan Bartwal (55 kg), Sachin (60 kg), Sumit (75 kg), Lakshya Chahar (80 kg), Jugnoo (85 kg), Harsh Choudhary (90 kg), and Narender (90+ kg), showcasing India's robust presence and versatility across all weight categories.
All athletes participated in an intensive training camp in Sheffield from August 18 to September 1, 2025, under the supervision of head coaches and support staff, including physiotherapists and a medical doctor, ensuring optimal fitness and readiness. The camp focused on refining techniques, enhancing strategies, and preparing the boxers to face the world's elite. With champions and medal contenders in every weight division, India is set to compete at the highest level and demonstrate the depth and competitiveness of its boxing talent.
