Indian Badminton Stars Express Frustration Over Lack of Recognition After Thomas Cup Bronze
India's Thomas Cup Journey and Recognition Issues
India fell short of defending its Thomas Cup title, losing to France in the semi-finals. Nevertheless, the team secured a bronze medal, marking only the second time India has medaled in this prestigious tournament, often referred to as the World Cup of badminton. Despite this achievement, the Indian players felt their accomplishments went largely unrecognized, leading Satwiksairaj Rankiredy and Chirag Shetty to express their disappointment on social media.
In a candid discussion, Chirag shared that they were surprised by the lack of fanfare at the airport following their bronze medal victory. He reflected on the muted celebrations after their previous Thomas Cup win in 2022, stating, "We didn't anticipate such a reaction. It stems from frustration over how our achievements have been celebrated in the past. I believe our victories deserve more recognition, not just in badminton but across all sports in India."
Chirag emphasized that India is still developing its sporting culture, unlike countries such as the USA or China. He noted, "We have a long way to go in terms of celebrating our athletes. While we do receive some recognition, it is not sufficient. Our badminton team has consistently performed well in various competitions, yet the acknowledgment remains inadequate."
Satwik echoed these sentiments, stating that he felt compelled to speak out about the ongoing issue of recognition for athletes. "It's frustrating that after winning, there is little to no celebration. If this trend continues, future athletes may face the same lack of recognition. My goal is to encourage people to appreciate all sports, not just cricket. I celebrate every Indian victory, whether in cricket or athletics, like when Neeraj Chopra competes in javelin throw," he remarked.
Both Chirag and Satwik are celebrated two-time Commonwealth Games gold medalists and made history in 2023 by becoming the first Indian duo to reach the top of the BWF rankings.
