Gratitude from Indian Athletes

Chennai (Tamil Nadu) [India], November 2: Indian squash player Shameena Riaz and sailor Nethra Kumanan have expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the backing they received from their university, which has played a crucial role in their athletic journeys. They noted that this encouragement has inspired them to strive for greater success on both national and international stages.

In a conversation, Shameena Riaz shared her pride in winning a bronze medal for India, highlighting the significance of this achievement, especially in light of her father's past successes in the sport.

“Securing a bronze medal for India fills me with pride. In the realm of squash, this is one of the most important milestones. My father has previously earned both gold and silver medals, so following in his footsteps—even with a bronze—is an incredible feeling,” she remarked.

Currently enrolled at SRM, Shameena acknowledged the extensive support from her institution, stating that the recognition and financial reward from the university would further motivate her to strive for more medals for her country, state, and college.

“As a student at SRM, I have received tremendous support in every aspect. They have honored us and provided a significant cash prize; this encourages us to work even harder and achieve more for our country, state, and college,” she added.

Shameena also mentioned that her primary focus is on rigorous training for upcoming competitions.

“I am currently dedicating myself to training—my entire focus is on preparing for future events and aiming to win them,” she stated.

On the other hand, sailor Nethra Kumanan expressed her gratitude towards her university for facilitating overseas travel, training, and participation in international events, emphasizing that this support has been vital for athletes to perform at their peak.

“We are all extremely thankful to our university for their support, which allows us to travel abroad, receive training, and compete in various races. This backing enables us to excel and return with accomplishments,” Nethra explained.

Discussing her future aspirations, Nethra mentioned that her next significant goal is to assist India in qualifying for the Olympic Games.

“My upcoming objective is to help India secure a spot in the Olympics. There are several events scheduled for January, and I will begin my training next week. The aim is to return from the Olympics with a noteworthy achievement,” she concluded.

The SRM Institute of Science and Technology (SRMIST) recently honored six student achievers and one alumna with cash prizes totaling Rs 23 lakh for their performances at the 2026 Asian Games and their achievements in international chess.

The recognition ceremony, titled 'Celebrating the Asian Games Medal Winners and Three Chess Grandmasters,' took place at Ramada Plaza in Guindy, Chennai.
