Indian Army Claims Inaugural Royal Enfield Challengers' Cup

In a thrilling conclusion to the first-ever Royal Enfield Challengers' Cup, the Indian Army Ice Hockey Team emerged victorious with a narrow 6-5 win over Leh Kings at the Nawang Dorjay Stobdan (NDS) Stadium in Leh. This tournament showcased the finest emerging talents from the Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League, with Leh Kings putting up a fierce fight against the nation's top ice hockey team, ultimately succumbing to a last-minute goal.

Padma Namgail netted the decisive goal in the final moments, finishing a pass from Phuntsog Namgail, in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The match began with Leh Kings taking the lead, as Tsering Angchuk scored following a precise assist from Mushtaque Ahmad Giri.

Back-and-Forth Battle

The Indian Army quickly equalized, with Dorjay Angchuk scoring from Phuntsog Namgail's setup. Jigmath Kunzang then put the Army team ahead 2-1, converting an assist from Padma Namgail. They extended their lead to 3-1 early in the second period, thanks to Rigzin Norboo's goal from a play initiated by Stanzin Namgail.

Leh Kings, however, showed resilience. Stanzin Angchok scored twice in quick succession, leveling the score at 3-3 with assists from Stanzin Lotus and Mushtaque Ahmad Giri. Rigzin Norboo regained the lead for the Army team, but Leh Kings responded again, with Chamba Tsetan scoring to end the second period tied at 4-4.

Dramatic Final Period

Just a minute into the third period, Stanzin Angchok completed his hat-trick, giving Leh Kings a 5-4 lead. The Indian Army, facing their first potential defeat, showcased their championship mentality. Jigmath Kunzang equalized again, and Padma Namgail, assisted by Phuntsog Namgail, scored the winning goal, sealing the match at 6-5 and securing the tournament title.

Recognition for Outstanding Players

The tournament also honored individual excellence, with Sonam Tsetan of the Indian Army Ice Hockey Team named Best Goalkeeper for his stellar performances, while Tsering Angchuk of Leh Kings was awarded Best Player of the Tournament for his remarkable contributions.

A Platform for Growth

The final underscored the vision behind the Royal Enfield Challengers' Cup, designed to bridge grassroots development with elite competition. This tournament provided players from the Royal Enfield Social Mission's leagues a chance to compete against top institutional teams, highlighting the rapid development of ice hockey in the Himalayas.

Organized in collaboration with the Ice Hockey Association of Ladakh and the Ice Hockey Association of Lahaul & Spiti, the tournament featured five teams in a round-robin format, culminating in the final between the top two teams.

Building a Sustainable Sports Ecosystem

Vigyat Singh, Director at Eicher Group Foundation, remarked on the evolution of ice hockey in the region, noting that the Challengers' Cup, held in August at Leh's all-season artificial ice rink, reflects significant progress. He emphasized the importance of continuous training and competitive exposure for young athletes.

Singh stated, "This tournament celebrates the collective effort to build a sustainable sporting ecosystem, which is a long-term commitment we are dedicated to."

Showcasing Emerging Talent

In addition to the matches, regional teams participated in specialized training sessions from August 1 to August 4, enhancing their skills with experienced coaches. Tsewang Namgyal, Captain of the Indian Army Ice Hockey Team, highlighted the importance of exposure for young players, stating that the Challengers' Cup allowed them to showcase their talent to a large audience, many of whom were experiencing ice hockey for the first time.

A Historic Milestone for Ice Hockey

The Challengers' Cup served as a new platform for emerging athletes from the Royal Enfield Ice Hockey League and Spiti Cup, allowing them to compete against elite teams. The tournament, hosted at Leh's upgraded ice rink, marked a significant milestone for ice hockey in the Himalayas, attracting over 15,000 spectators and introducing competitive ice hockey to both local and international audiences.
