India U20 Team Prepares for SAFF Championship in Maldives
Focus on Success at the SAFF U20 Championship
Male [Maldives], March 25: The stunning turquoise waters of the Maldives set a beautiful scene, but within the Indian camp, the emphasis is strictly on achieving their goals. Mahesh Gawali, who serves as the head coach for the India U20 men's national team and is also an assistant coach for the senior men's team, is leading the charge at the SAFF U20 Championship.
According to a release from the All India Football Federation (AIFF), Gawali has quickly aligned the players with the tournament's objectives.
Upon their arrival in Male, the focus has been on clarity, sharpness, and readiness for competitive play. The Blue Colts are set to compete against Pakistan on March 26 and Bangladesh on March 28 in Group B.
Both matches are scheduled to kick off at 16:15 IST at the National Stadium in Male.
Group A features the host nation Maldives, along with Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan. The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals on April 1, with the final taking place on April 3. Fans can watch all matches live on the Sportzworkz YouTube Channel.
As India prepares to start their campaign on March 26, the-aiff.com spoke with Gawali about enhancing the pathway to the senior team, maintaining a consistent playing philosophy across different age groups, and utilizing this tournament to assess the temperament of a talented group of young players.
Gawali emphasized, “This is a significant responsibility. Our goal is to ensure continuity between youth teams and the senior national squad. We want U20 players to grasp the expectations early regarding playing style and professionalism, making their transition smoother when they move up. This tournament allows us to closely observe them in competitive settings and guide them appropriately.”
When discussing the long-term vision set by India’s head coach Khalid Jamil, Gawali noted, “The U20 team plays a crucial role in that vision. Many players are at an age where they are ready to advance. We aim to enhance their decision-making, game awareness, and consistency.”
He added, “We want them to evolve into players who can contribute to the U23 and senior teams. The more exposure they gain in tournaments like this, the better equipped they will be for future challenges.”
On implementing a consistent playing philosophy across age groups, Gawali stated that he is concentrating on clear principles.
“We are focusing on straightforward yet clear principles. We want players to be sharp and intelligent in their decision-making. Quick thinking and good game reading will help them feel more comfortable with the ball, which is essential. We also emphasize defensive discipline and quick transitions,” he explained.
“The aim is to prepare them for high-intensity football. We expect a high level, and players must strive to meet that standard by playing smart, moving the ball quickly, and making sound decisions under pressure. We are also focusing on how we play and how players adapt to various situations, whether the game is fast-paced or slower,” he added.
When asked about his message ahead of the tournament, Gawali encouraged the players to remain confident and positive, believing in their collective potential.
“The message is to stay confident and positive, trusting that we can perform well as a team. They have worked hard to reach this point, and it’s vital that they support each other and focus on their roles. If they play with discipline, the results will follow. Additionally, we want them to learn from every match and continue improving. This is a crucial step in their journey, and we want them to seize this opportunity.”
