India's Exciting Announcement for the 2030 Commonwealth Games

The recent declaration of India as the host for the 2030 Commonwealth Games has been met with great enthusiasm by Commonwealth Games Australia.

Ahmedabad, also known as Amdavad in Gujarat, will welcome the Games, succeeding Glasgow 2026. This decision marks a pivotal moment for the Commonwealth Movement, resulting from a collaborative bidding process involving multiple continents, as stated in a release from Commonwealth Games Australia (CGA).

This edition of the Commonwealth Games will commemorate a century since the inaugural event held in Hamilton, Canada, showcasing the progress made in sports over the past hundred years.

The announcement was made during the ongoing Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow, Scotland, which featured a vibrant celebration of Indian culture and a spectacular fireworks display at the Clyde Arc Bridge.

Commonwealth Sport plans to share images and videos from the General Assembly through their official channels. CGA President Ben Houston expressed his congratulations to India, emphasizing that this confirmation enhances confidence in the future of the Games.

“Amdavad, here we come,” Houston remarked, praising India for its thoughtful bid that not only celebrates the centenary of the Games but also sets the stage for Australian athletes ahead of the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Houston highlighted the importance of collaboration within Commonwealth Sport and its members, stating, “This moment is monumental for the Commonwealth Sport Movement.”

He noted that the cancellation of Victoria 2026 was a significant setback, but it has led to a proactive response from Commonwealth nations, ensuring a successful Glasgow event next year and an enthusiastic host for 2030.

“We commend Commonwealth Sport, its Executive Board, and everyone involved in the bidding process for their hard work, looking forward to a future filled with inspiring opportunities for Australian athletes,” Houston concluded.

Alongside the host announcement, Commonwealth Sport has revealed an initial list of sports for the Ahmedabad Games, with more to be added later.

The confirmed sports for 2030 include Athletics and Para-Athletics, Bowls and Para-Bowls, Boxing, Artistic Gymnastics, Netball, Swimming and Para-Swimming, Table Tennis and Para-Table Tennis, and Weightlifting and Para-Powerlifting.

A selection process will determine the remaining sports for the 2030 program, which is expected to feature 15-17 sports, with the final lineup to be confirmed in 2026.

Potential sports under consideration include Archery, Badminton, Basketball (3x3), Wheelchair Basketball (3x3), Beach Volleyball, Cricket T20, Cycling, Diving, Rhythmic Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Rugby Sevens, Shooting, Squash, Triathlon, Para-Triathlon, and Wrestling.

Australia has a long-standing relationship with the Commonwealth Games, having participated in every edition since 1930 and hosting the event five times.

CGA is dedicated to supporting the Commonwealth Sport Movement, ensuring that the Games continue to offer transformative opportunities for athletes, coaches, and officials while promoting diversity, inclusion, and unity through sports.
