India to Host 2030 Commonwealth Games: Archers Anticipate a Bright Future
India's Commonwealth Games 2030 Plans
India is gearing up to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030, set to take place in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. This edition promises to feature an expanded program compared to the 2026 Games in Glasgow, which will include 10 sports and six para events. Traditional medal-winning sports for India, such as shooting, wrestling, badminton, and archery, are expected to be part of the lineup. Notable Indian archers Deepika Kumari and Tarundeep Rai have shared their enthusiasm regarding the inclusion of archery in the upcoming Games.
Reflections on the 2010 Games and Future Aspirations
During the last Commonwealth Games hosted by India in 2010, 17 sports were contested, leading to a remarkable medal tally for the host nation: 30 in shooting, 19 in wrestling, 8 in archery, and 4 in badminton. Deepika, who secured India's first women's individual recurve gold at the 2010 Delhi Games, reflected on how this achievement significantly impacted her career and the sport's visibility. She stated, "The 2010 Commonwealth Games were pivotal for me as a 16-year-old, marking my entry into a sport that was not widely recognized. I didn't fully grasp the significance of my victory at the time, but it undoubtedly elevated the profile of archery in India. Many people became aware of the sport thanks to my success at the Commonwealth Games, and the event educated the public about various sports as they experienced them firsthand in New Delhi."
Expectations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games
Deepika is optimistic that the upcoming Games will surpass previous editions. She remarked, "Given how we organized the Commonwealth Games in 2010, I believe the 2030 event will be even more impressive, especially with archery returning. We archers have not participated in this multi-nation event since the Delhi Games, and I hope to see archery make a strong comeback."
Grassroots Development and Long-Term Benefits
Tarundeep Rai, who earned a bronze medal in the men's recurve team event at the 2010 Games, emphasized the lasting effects of hosting significant sporting events on grassroots participation and infrastructure. The three-time Olympian, who aims for a medal at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, noted the remarkable growth of archery in India since 2010. He stated, "The 2010 Commonwealth Games were a transformative moment for the archery community. We saw improvements in infrastructure and individual skills. Back then, there were about 400 archers in India; now, that number has surged to over 30,000 active archers. On any given day, 100 archers can qualify for the Indian team, showcasing the progress made since the 2010 Games."
A Bright Future for Indian Archery
Rai expressed his excitement about India's hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games, stating, "This is a joyous occasion for all Indian athletes. If India could host such prestigious events every five or ten years, it would significantly enhance the sports ecosystem. The 2030 Games will inspire many young talents to pursue sports as a career."
Optimism for Future Achievements
Jayanta Talukdar, an Olympian and medallist at both the Asian and Commonwealth Games, also conveyed his confidence in India's future performance. He noted, "The 2010 Commonwealth Games led to a surge in new academies and players, as parents recognized the success of archers. The Archery Association of India and athletes began attracting more sponsorships, resulting in a positive trajectory for Indian archery. With the 2030 Commonwealth Games on the horizon, I am confident that our performance will be exceptional, whether in recurve or compound archery, especially with the motivation of competing in front of a home crowd. Many experienced archers, including myself, are already mentoring young talents who will be ready to compete at a high level by then."
