India Stages Strong Comeback Against South Africa in Guwahati Test
India's Resilient Performance on Day 1
In a remarkable turnaround during the final session of the second Test in Guwahati, India managed to restrict South Africa to 247/6 at the end of Day 1. The South African team, which was in a strong position at 156/2 during lunch, struggled as Indian bowlers made consistent breakthroughs in the last session.
India's Final Session Fightback
During the third session, South Africa scored 91 runs but lost four vital wickets. Captain Temba Bavuma, who had been performing well, was dismissed for 41 by Ravindra Jadeja, marking his first wicket of the match. Tristan Stubbs, who was batting confidently on 49, fell next, giving Kuldeep Yadav his second wicket. After reaching 200, South Africa faced another blow when Wiaan Mulder was out for 13, with Kuldeep striking again. The visitors found themselves in a precarious position at 201/5, and Tony de Zorzi was the last wicket to fall for the day, dismissed by Mohammed Siraj for 28.
Kuldeep Yadav was the standout bowler for India, finishing with impressive figures of 3/48, while Jasprit Bumrah, Siraj, and Jadeja each contributed with a wicket.
Bavuma and Stubbs Steady the Ship
At the conclusion of the second session, South Africa stood at 156/2 after 55 overs, with Bavuma (36* off 86 balls) and Stubbs (32* off 82 balls) anchoring the innings. The Proteas began this session at 82/1 with Rickelton and Bavuma at the crease.
After the tea break, Kuldeep Yadav provided an early breakthrough by dismissing opener Ryan Rickelton (35 off 82 balls) in the 28th over. Following Rickelton's exit, Stubbs and Bavuma formed a solid partnership, carefully observing the conditions before accelerating their scoring. Stubbs hit two boundaries against Siraj in the 33rd over, while Bavuma struck consecutive fours against the Indian bowler in the 37th over, showcasing their aggressive intent. Stubbs also hit his first six off Kuldeep Yadav in the 42nd over. India opted for their first DRS in the 45th over when Bavuma was struck on the pads while attempting a sweep shot against Jadeja. The review confirmed that the ball had missed the leg stump, resulting in India losing their first review as Bavuma survived.
Bavuma Reaches Captaincy Milestone
Bavuma also achieved a significant milestone by scoring 1000 runs in Tests as captain during the 50th over, becoming the ninth South African to reach this mark. He is now tied for the second-fastest to achieve this feat for the Proteas, alongside Dudley Nourse, and only trails Graeme Smith (17 innings).
Both Stubbs and Bavuma continued to build their innings, leading South Africa to a solid position of 156/2 at tea in this historic Test match in Guwahati.
Proteas Strong in the First Session
Earlier in the day, South Africa scored 82/1 in the first session after choosing to bat first. The opening partnership between Aiden Markram and Rickelton was broken by Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled out Markram for 38 runs off 81 balls, which included five boundaries.
This Test match marks the first international Test hosted in Guwahati, where the pitch has provided good bounce, allowing the Proteas to capitalize effectively. India currently trails 1-0 in the two-match Test series.
