India Set to Host the 2030 Commonwealth Games: What This Means for Sports

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his heartfelt congratulations to the citizens of India following the country's successful bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with Ahmedabad designated as the host city. This significant announcement was made during the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) General Assembly held in Glasgow on Wednesday.
Modi shared his excitement on social media, stating, "This achievement places India prominently on the global sports stage. Embracing the spirit of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, we are eager to celebrate these historic games with immense enthusiasm and look forward to welcoming the world!"
The organizing committee for Amdavad 2030 will collaborate with Commonwealth Sport and international federations to finalize a lineup of 15 to 17 sports, in line with the recent Sport Programme Review. Additional sports such as T20 cricket, shooting, hockey, wrestling, judo, rugby sevens, and 3x3 basketball are under consideration, along with the possibility of introducing two new sports proposed by the host.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah praised PM Modi for this achievement, highlighting the transformation of India into a global sports hub.
He stated, "Congratulations to every citizen as India wins the prestigious bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad. This reflects PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision for making our Bharat a global sports hotspot. Through dedicated efforts over the past decade, Modi Ji has developed world-class sports infrastructure and enhanced our nation's potential through effective governance and teamwork."

India previously achieved remarkable success in the Commonwealth Games, securing a total of 101 medals, including 38 golds, during the 2010 edition in New Delhi, with shooting contributing 30 medals. In the 2022 Games, India won 61 medals, including 22 golds, although shooting was not part of the Birmingham edition.
Ahmedabad will become the second Indian city and the third in Asia to host the Commonwealth Games. The upcoming edition is scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, in 2026, following the Birmingham Games in 2022.
