India Triumphs in First ODI Against Afghanistan

In a thrilling encounter at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, India achieved a convincing seven-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the opening ODI of their three-match series. Shubman Gill's impressive unbeaten score of 84, along with debutants Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey each taking three wickets, played a pivotal role in this win.

After Afghanistan was bowled out for 194 runs in just 24.5 overs due to the effective bowling of Brar and Dubey, India chased down the target of 195 runs with relative ease, finishing the match in 22.5 overs.

Gill's Leadership Shines in the Chase

Leading the charge, skipper Shubman Gill scored a remarkable 84 runs off 66 balls, featuring eight fours and two sixes. He received solid support from Ishan Kishan, who contributed 34 runs, and KL Rahul, who scored 39 runs off just 19 balls, ensuring a smooth chase.

India started their innings aggressively, with Gill and Rohit Sharma (16 runs) putting on a solid opening partnership. However, Rohit was run out in the sixth over due to a miscommunication with Gill, leaving India at 47 for 1.

Partnerships Propel India Forward

Despite the early wicket, India's scoring rate remained high. Kishan joined Gill, and together they pushed the score past 100 runs by the 12th over. Gill reached his half-century in just 37 balls, with India at 109 for 2.

Afghanistan's captain, Hashmatullah Shahidi, turned to Rashid Khan, who managed to break the 70-run partnership by dismissing Kishan in the 13th over. However, any hopes of a comeback for Afghanistan were quickly dashed as KL Rahul joined Gill, forming an unbeaten partnership of 53 runs off 32 balls.

Debutants Shine in Bowling Attack

Earlier in the match, rain reduced the game to a 25-over contest, allowing each team to use a maximum of five bowlers. Debutants Harsh Dubey and Gurnoor Brar made an immediate impact, taking three wickets each.

Afghanistan struggled initially, losing their openers early. Brar dismissed Ibrahim Zadran for just one run, and Arshdeep Singh quickly followed up by removing Sediqullah Atal for a duck.

Gurbaz's Century Highlights Afghanistan's Innings

Rahmanullah Gurbaz, however, fought back for Afghanistan, scoring a brilliant century. He reached his 100 off just 51 balls, hitting eight fours and six sixes before being dismissed for 102.

Gurbaz's partnership with Shahidi was crucial, as they added 116 runs for the fourth wicket, showcasing a run rate of 10.54, the second-best for Afghanistan in ODIs.

India's Bowlers Seal the Deal

As the innings progressed, Dubey and Brar continued to take wickets, with Dubey claiming the captain Shahidi and later removing two more batsmen in quick succession. Brar wrapped up the innings by taking the final wicket, leaving Afghanistan all out for 194.

With this victory, India takes a 1-0 lead in the ODI series, and Gill's performance also marked him as the second-fastest player to reach 3000 ODI runs, achieving this milestone in just 62 innings.
