India-Pakistan Veterans Cricket Match Canceled Amid Tensions

Cancellation of the Veterans Cricket Match

A veterans' cricket match featuring India and Pakistan, part of the World Championship of Legends, was called off on Sunday. This decision came after Indian players, including Shikhar Dhawan, opted out due to the Pahalgam terror attack that occurred in April.

The tournament's second edition commenced on July 18 at Edgbaston, with the final set for August 2. Yuvraj Singh, a World Cup champion, leads the Indian legends team, which includes notable players such as Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Suresh Raina, Robin Uthappa, and Varun Aaron.

Organizers of the WCL released a statement on their X account explaining the cancellation. They aimed to evoke 'happy memories' through the match.

The statement noted, 'With the news of the Pakistan hockey team visiting India this year and the recent India vs Pakistan volleyball match, we thought it would be fitting to continue with the cricket match to create joyful moments for fans worldwide.'

However, they acknowledged that their intentions may have unintentionally offended some, stating, 'We may have stirred emotions and hurt feelings.'

The organizers expressed regret for any discomfort caused to the Indian legends, leading to the decision to cancel the match. They reiterated their desire to bring joy to fans.

Shikhar Dhawan also made his stance clear on X, confirming his withdrawal from the match against Pakistan. He stated, 'I will not participate in any matches against the Pakistan team in the upcoming WCL League.'

Dhawan emphasized that his decision was influenced by the current 'geopolitical' climate following the Pahalgam attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor.

He added, 'Given the ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, my team and I have made this decision after careful consideration. We kindly ask for the league's understanding and cooperation.'

In the previous edition of the tournament, India triumphed over Pakistan by five wickets, securing victory at Edgbaston.
